Herbert Stanley Reed
Sir Herbert Stanley Reed (28 January 1872 – 17 January 1969) was an important figure in the media of India in the early 20th century who later became a Conservative Party politician in the UK. He was conservative member for the Aylesbury division of Buckinghamshire. Reed was the longest serving Editor of ''The Times of India'' from 1907 until 1924. He received correspondence from the major figures of India such as Mahatma Gandhi. In all he lived in India for fifty years. He was respected in the United Kingdom as an expert on Indian current affairs. He christened Jaipur as 'the Pink City of India'. Reed was returned as Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Aylesbury in a by-election in 1938. He was re-elected at the 1945 general election and stepped down at the 1950 general election, when aged 78. Bombardier Henry Herbert Reed GC (1911 – 20 June 1941), of No. 2 Battalion, 1 Maritime Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, was posthumously awarded the George Cross for the "gallant and utterly selfless action" he showed after the merchant ship SS ''Cormount'' was attacked by German E-boats and planes on 20 June 1941. 20 June 1941 The ship was raked by machine-gun fire from the attacking planes, and Reed, who had volunteered to man anti-aircraft guns on merchant shipping, had suffered a mortal stomach wound. Despite his injuries, he rescued the injured Chief Officer from the badly damaged bridge and carried him down two sets of ladders to safety. He also managed to move an injured steward to cover before dying minutes later of his wounds. The ship survived the attack, despite being struck by an air-launched torpedo. Herbert Taylor Reade
Herbert Taylor Reade (20 September 1828, Perth, Upper Canada – 23 June 1897, Bath), was a Canadian born recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious British honour. The award was for gallantry in the face of the enemy.''The Victoria Cross and George Cross: the complete history,'' Volume I 1854-1914, p. 180-181. He became a Doctor of Medicine in 1850, and joined the British Army as an Assistant Surgeon in November of that same year.
