Heraldry Society Of Scotland
The Heraldry Society of Scotland was founded in 1977 with the aim of improving the study of heraldry. The Society's arms feature a Saint Andrew's Cross with silver thistles and a red shield. Their crest is a herald wearing a tabard of the arms, and their motto is ''Tak Tent of Armes'', Scots for "take notice of arms". History The society was founded in 1977 and was a notable part of a scholastic revival of heraldry that occurred in Scotland in the 1970s. In 1986 the society's St Andrew Lecture was presented by John Brooke-Little, in his capacity of Norroy and Ulster King of Arms, the first official visit to Scotland by an English herald since 1639. In 2001 it registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. In 2003 the society commissioned a crown for the Lord Lyon King of Arms at the cost of around £10,000, to replace the crown that was last seen in the 17th century. The next year the society assisted United States Secretary of State Colin Powell when he sought to ...

Tabard
A tabard is a type of short coat that was commonly worn by men during the late Middle Ages and early modern period in Europe. Generally worn outdoors, the coat was either sleeveless or had short sleeves or shoulder pieces. In its more developed form it was open at the sides, and it could be worn with or without a belt. Though most were ordinary garments, often work clothes, tabards might be emblazoned on the front and back with a heraldry, coat of arms (livery), and in this form they survive as the distinctive garment of Officer of Arms, officers of arms. In modern British English, British usage, the term has been revived for what is known in American English as a Apron#Tabard, cobbler apron: a lightweight open-sided upper overgarment, of similar design to its medieval and heraldic counterpart, worn in particular by workers in the catering, cleaning and healthcare industries as Personal protective equipment, protective clothing, or outdoors by those requiring high-visibility clo ...

Scottish Heraldry
Heraldry in Scotland, while broadly similar to that practised in England and elsewhere in western Europe, has its own distinctive features. Its heraldic executive is separate from that of the rest of the United Kingdom. Executive The Scottish heraldic executive is separate from that of the remainder of the United Kingdom and is vested in the Lord Lyon King of Arms. Friar 1987, p. 227. The earliest reference to the Lyon, as such, dates to the reign of Robert the Bruce in 1318, although with respect to certain of his functions he is considered the successor of royal officials dating to ancient Celtic times. Dennis 1999, p. 5. The Lord Lyon exercises general jurisdiction over all matters armorial in Scotland and serves as a Judge of the Realm. He also decides on questions relating to family representation, pedigrees and genealogies. In addition, he supervises all state, royal and public ceremonies in Scotland. The Lord Lyon also asserts the right to decide who is Head of the Clan o ...

Heraldic Societies
Heraldry is a discipline relating to the design, display and study of armorial bearings (known as armory), as well as related disciplines, such as vexillology, together with the study of ceremony, rank and pedigree. Armory, the best-known branch of heraldry, concerns the design and transmission of the heraldic achievement. The achievement, or armorial bearings usually includes a coat of arms on a shield, helmet and crest, together with any accompanying devices, such as supporters, badges, heraldic banners and mottoes. Although the use of various devices to signify individuals and groups goes back to antiquity, both the form and use of such devices varied widely, as the concept of regular, hereditary designs, constituting the distinguishing feature of heraldry, did not develop until the High Middle Ages. It is often claimed that the use of helmets with face guards during this period made it difficult to recognize one's commanders in the field when large armies gathered together f ...
