Henry Wise (gardener)
Henry Wise (bapt. 4 September 1653 – 1738) was an English gardener, designer, and nurseryman. He was apprenticed to George London, working at Brompton Nursery, on the present site of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The two later worked as partners on parterre gardens at Hampton Court, Chelsea Hospital, Longleat, Chatsworth, Melbourne Hall, Wimpole Hall and Castle Howard, drawing inspiration from engravings of contemporary garden designs in France and the Netherlands. Wise and London translated into English two well-known French texts on gardening. The resulting work was titled "The Retir'd Gard'ner, in Two Volumes: the Whole Revis'd, with Several Alterations and Additions, Which Render It Proper for Our English Culture." The book was printed in London in 1706 and went through several printings thanks to its popularity. Henry Wise (merchant)
Henry Wise (16 August 1802 – 25 December 1866) was a mariner and merchant associated with the Far East. Born in Oxford, Wise worked his way up as a mariner in the East India Company's Marine Service from midshipman in 1819 to chief officer in 1831, and then a supercargo in the China trade. His logbooks from voyages in the Castle Huntly, Astell, and Elizabeth are preserved at the National Maritime Museum. He invented several schemes related to speeding travel between England and the East, publishing a book proposing the use of steam and a 'propellor' in 1839, a 'Plan for the Acceleration of the China Mails' (i.e. their conveyance from Suez via Ceylon to Hong Kong direct) submitted to her Majesty's Government 14 September 1843, and advocating a canal across Siam in 1859. Henry Augustus Wise
Henry Augustus Wise (May 24, 1819 – April 3, 1869) was an author and United States Navy officer. Biography He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to George Stewart Wise and Catherine Standsberry. The Wise family moved to Virginia and his Naval career began in 1834 as a midshipman. Henry served in the U.S.–Mexican War as a lieutenant on board the razee , seeing action in the Gulf of California. He dedicated his consequent naval service in becoming an expert in gunnery. When the American Civil War broke out he considered serving with his home state of Virginia when they left the Union but opted to stay in the U.S. Navy as a captain. Promoted to commander of the in 1862, he was soon ordered to destroy the Gosport Navy Yard, near his old home. In 1864 President Abraham Lincoln appointed Wise chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, and he was promoted to captain in 1866; he held the ordnance position until his resignation in 1868. Henry Seiler Wise (July 16, 1909 – March 16, 1982) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Illinois and the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. Carmel, Illinois, Wise received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1933 and a Bachelor of Laws from Washington University School of Law in 1933. Henry Christopher Wise (7 October 1806 – 15 January 1883) was an English Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1865 to 1874. Wise was the son of Rev. Henry Wise of the Priory, Warwick and his wife Charlotte Mary Porten, daughter of Sir Stanier Porten. He was educated at Rugby School and at Oriel College, Oxford. He was Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for Warwickshire and a major in the Warwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry. At the 1865 general election Wise was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for South Warwickshire South Warwickshire was a parliamentary constituency in the county of Warwickshire in England. Henry Christopher Wise (British Army Officer)
Captain Henry Christopher Wise (1829 – 12 December 1854) was the highest-ranking British soldier who died in the Eureka rebellion. Wise was the son of Henry Christopher Wise, an English Conservative politician, and his first wife Harriett Skipwith. He was edjucated at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, being commissioned Ensign in the 40th Regiment of Foot in 1847. He became Lieutenant in 1849 and was assigned as Adjutant. The regiment was sent from England to serve in Australia, and arrived in Victoria in 1852. In the following year he was promoted to Captain. Wise was sent to Ballarat in November 1854 to suppress the miners' opposition.
