Henry Walter Wood
Henry Walter Wood (ca. 1825 - 3 September 1869) was an English architect based in Nottingham. Career He was born around 1825 in Nottingham, the son of architect and surveyor Henry Moses Wood. He trained as an architect in his father's practice. He married Frances Mary Crofts, daughter of William Crofts of Lenton, at Holy Trinity Church, Lenton Holy Trinity Church, Lenton is a parish church in the Church of England Diocese of Southwell. Henry Moses Wood
Henry Moses Wood (1788–28 September 1867) was an architect based in Nottingham. Career He studied in the practice of Edward Staveley, and continued the business after Staveley's death in 1837. One of his pupils, William Booker established himself as an architect and surveyor in Nottingham. In 1831, jointly with Edward Staveley, he produced a detailed plan and map of Nottingham and its suburbs. In 1835-1836 he was Sheriff of Nottingham. He was manager of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Fire and Life Assurance Company. His son succeeded him in this business. In 1811, he married a Miss Wilson of Shelford Manor and they had 11 children. He died in Buxton, Derbyshire on 28 September 1867. Holy Trinity Church, Lenton
Holy Trinity Church, Lenton is a parish church in the Church of England Diocese of Southwell. The church is Grade II* listed by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport as it is a particularly significant building of more than local interest. History Holy Trinity was designed by the architect Henry Isaac Stevens and opened in 1842. It was consecrated on 6 October 1842 by the Lord Bishop of Lincoln (the Right Reverend John Jackson D.D.). The architectural style is early English. Built in stone with a high pitched roof, it consists of a nave with clerestory, aisles to north and south, a chancel, vestry, organ-chamber, and a west end pinnacled tower. The chancel screen was designed by John Rigby Poyser and installed in 1935. Its dimensions are 123 feet long and 57 feet wide. When opened it had seating for 660 people. George Eaton Stanger
George Eaton Stanger MRCSE Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries, LSA (1816-1892) was an English surgeon based in Nottingham. Life He was born in 1816, the son of William Stanger (1781-1855) and Rebecca Yorke (1785-1856). He was baptised in Fleet Baptist Chapel, Lincolnshire on 15 April 1816. He studied medicine in London at Guy's Hospital and in the late 1830s was a ship's surgeon and chaplain employed by the South Australian Company, which was set up to assist merchants colonising South Australia. Stanger served aboard the ''Sarah & Elizabeth'', a ship sailing from Hull to South Australia under Captain Wakeling. He was appointed a member of the College of Surgeons and the Apothecaries' Hall, London, Apothecaries Hall in July 1840. He then moved to practice in Nottingham in the early 1840s. Castle Gate Congregational Centre
Castle Gate Congregational Centre is in Nottingham. It is a Grade II listed building. History The congregation formed in the 1650s. The first meeting house on Castle Gate, Nottingham, Castle Gate was established in 1689 under the Act of Toleration 1689, Act of Toleration. The present building was erected in 1863 to designs by the architect Richard Charles Sutton, and opened for worship in 1864. The congregation suffered from some embarrassment in 1866 when Henry Walter Wood, local architect and surveyor petitioned for divorce from his wife on the grounds of her adultery with George Eaton Stanger, surgeon and a deacon of the Chapel. The trial in 1867 lasted three days and was widely reported in the National press. Wood was awarded £3,000 from Stanger in damages.
