Henry Stevens (bibliographer)
Henry Stevens (August 24, 1819 – February 28, 1886) was a renowned American bibliographer. Biography Stevens was born in Barnet, Vermont. He studied at Middlebury College, Vermont, in 1838–1839, graduated at Yale in 1843, where he was a member of Skull and Bones, and studied at Harvard Law School in 1843–1844. In 1845 he went to London, where he was employed during most of the remainder of his life as a collector of Americana for the British Museum and for various public and private American libraries. He was engaged by Sir Anthony Panizzi, librarian of the British Museum, to collect historical books, documents, journals, etc., concerning North and South America; and he was purchasing agent for the Smithsonian Institution and for the Library of Congress, as well as for James Lenox, of New York, for whom he secured much of the valuable Americana in the Lenox library in that city, and for the John Carter Brown library, at Providence, Rhode Island. Henry Herbert Stevens
Henry Herbert Stevens, (December 8, 1878 – June 14, 1973) was a Canadian politician and businessman. A member of R. B. Bennett's cabinet, he split with the Conservative Prime Minister to found the Reconstruction Party of Canada. Early life Stevens was born in Bristol, England and immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of nine. His family settled in Peterborough, Ontario where his widowed father raised him and his three brothers and sisters. The family moved to Vernon, British Columbia, in 1894 and Stevens found his first job there, as a grocery clerk, at the age of 16. He then went to northern British Columbia to work in the mining camps before working as a fireman on the Canadian Pacific Railway and later as a stagecoach driver. In 1899 he joined the United States Army, and travelled to the Philippines and then to China, where he was present during the Boxer Rebellion, before returning to British Columbia in 1901. Henry Stevens (GC)
Henry William Stevens GC (24 January 1928 – 17 November 2018) was awarded the George Cross for the gallantry he showed while serving as a constable in the Metropolitan Police on 29 March 1958. Stevens was born in Upton Park, London. Prior to joining the Metropolitan Police Force, he served three years in the Royal Navy. The Bickley burglary At around 8.00 pm, on 29 March 1958, a local criminal named Ronald Easterbrook, who was armed with a gun, was burgling a house in Bickley in the London Borough of Bromley. Police had been alerted to the burglary and dispatched PC Henry Stevens along with two other colleagues to investigate. Stevens went round to the rear of the property and spotted Easterbrook climbing over a wooden fence. Stevens identified himself as a police officer but when Easterbrook ran, Stevens gave chase along St. Georges Road, Bickley. Henry Isaac Stevens
Henry Isaac Stevens FRIBA was an architect based in Derby. He was born in London, in 1806, and died in 1873. In the late 1850s he changed his name to Isaac Henry Stevens. Family His parents were Isaac Stevens and Elizabeth Young. He married Anne, the daughter of William Martin on 7 August 1832 in Repton, Derbyshire. They had four children. In the 1861, census he is listed as Isaac H Stevens living in Ashbourne Road, Mackworth, Derbyshire. In the 1871, census he is listed as living at 20 Peartree Road in Litchurch, Derby. Career He was articled to William Martin in Bretby, and was also a pupil of George Maddox. He started in independent practice in 1834 in Hartshorne, Derbyshire. He moved to Derby in the late 1830s or early 1840s and was based at 16 Full Street in Derby. By 1847 he was at 49 Friargate, Derby. In 1857 he is listed as living in Mackworth. Henry Stevens (Australian Politician)
Henry Moreton Stevens (1854 - 15 November 1935) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Stevens was born at South Brisbane, Queensland, the son of Samuel Stevens, and his wife Jane (née Colton). Samuel Stevens was a cooper and an active member of the South Brisbane community, who stood for a seat as Alderman in the council elections of 1866. Henry was educated at the Brisbane National School and was a director of the Lanefield Co-Operative Dairy Co. and also the Queensland Farmers' Co-Operative District Co.. On 27 October 1880 he married Helen Hunt Mossop (died 1904) at Goodna and together had one son and one daughter. Helen died in 1904 and Stevens then married Jessie Mabel Webster (died 1956) on 26 April 1911. He died in November 1935 and his funeral proceeded from the Rosewood Congregational Church to the Tallegalla Cemetery. Henry Stevens (Wisconsin Politician)
Henry Stevens (January 26, 1818July 10, 1875) was an American farmer, Republican politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, representing Racine County from 1867 through 1870. He also served in the State Assembly during the 1864 session. Biography Henry Stevens was born in Wilton, New Hampshire, in January 1818. He was raised and educated there and moved to Caledonia, Wisconsin, in 1855, where he established a farm. In Caledonia, he was elected chairman of the town board. In 1863, in the midst of the American Civil War, he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly running on the National Union ticket. He was subsequently elected to the Wisconsin State Senate in 1866 and 1868. He did not run for a third term in 1870. Stevens killed himself on July 10, 1875, hanging himself from a tree near his home in Caledonia. Obituaries indicated that he had suffered from depression for some time.
