Henry Sherwood
Henry Sherwood, (1807 – July 7, 1855) was a lawyer and Tory politician in the Province of Canada. He was involved in provincial and municipal politics. Born into a Loyalist family in Brockville in Augusta Township, Upper Canada, he studied law and was called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1828. In 1838, he was appointed Queen's Counsel. Sherwood was part of the Family Compact, the inter-connected families of strong British and Loyalist sympathies which dominated the government of Upper Canada in the early years of the 19th century Sherwood was a member of the provincial Parliament of Upper Canada, elected in 1836, and subsequently was elected to the Parliament of the Province of Canada, although defeated in his first election attempt in 1841. Henry Sherwood (October 9, 1813 – November 10, 1896) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Henry Sherwood was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He moved with his parents to Catharine, New York, in 1817, and attended the common schools. During the Texas Revolution, Sherwood served in the Texas Army under Sam Houston in 1836 and 1837. He moved to Tioga County, Pennsylvania, and settled in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, in 1840. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and practiced his profession in Wellsboro. He was elected burgess of Wellsboro. Sherwood was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress. Henry Sherwood (January 27, 1824 – July 23, 1875) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Micajah Sherwood, and was born in that part of the Town of Troupsburg which was separated in 1828 to form the Town of Woodhull, in Steuben County, New York. He studied law with Ferral C. Dininny, was admitted to the bar in 1852, and practiced. In 1855, he married Eleanor Robinson. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Steuben Co., 2nd D.) in 1862 and 1863. In 1863, he was the Republican candidate for Speaker of the New York State Assembly, but due to a deadlocked assembly, he withdrew from the contest after the 78th ballot.
