Henry Hicks (Nova Scotia Politician)
Henry Davies Hicks, (March 5, 1915 – December 9, 1990) was a lawyer, university administrator, and politician in Nova Scotia. Born in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, the son of Henry Hicks and Annie Kinney, Hicks was educated in Bridgetown and at Mount Allison University, Dalhousie University and Oxford University. He was admitted to the Nova Scotia bar in 1941. During World War II, he served as a captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery. Hicks was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1945 as a Liberal for Annapolis County and served as Nova Scotia's first minister of education from 1949 to 1954 in the government of Angus Lewis Macdonald. When Macdonald died, Hicks ran for the Liberal party leadership against interim leader and then Premier Harold Connolly. The party was badly split along religious lines, with Protestants uniting behind Hicks to defeat Connolly, who was a Roman Catholic. Henry Hicks (1837–1899) was a Welsh physician and geologist during the 19th century. Personal life Henry Hicks was born on 26 May 1837 in the city of St Davids, Wales. His parents were Anne () and surgeon Thomas Hicks. Hicks married Mary Richardson in February 1864, with whom he had three daughters. He died on 18 November 1899 in Hendon, London. Medical career Hicks studied medicine at Guy's Hospital in London; in 1862, he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, and was licensed by Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. Hicks returned to St Davids to practise medicine, and in 1871, he moved his practise to Hendon, London. Focusing on mental health, Hicks received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of St Andrews in 1878, ultimately becoming the head of an asylum in Hendon Grove, solely treating women for mental disorders. Harry Hicks (athlete)
Harry Hicks (6 August 1925 – 25 April 2012) was a British long-distance runner and administrator for the Southern Cross Country Association (SEEA). He competed in the marathon at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Running for England in the 1949 and 1950 International CC Championship. He won the AAA Marathon Championship. After qualifying for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics he finished 15th. After retiring as an athlete he became the Southern Cross Country Association until the late 1980s.
