Henry Cockburn (footballer)
Henry Cockburn (14 September 1921 – 2 February 2004) was an English professional footballer, who played league football for Manchester United, Bury and Peterborough United. He represented England at international level, playing 13 times for his country. He also played once for the England B team. Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, Cockburn attended Stamford High School and began his football career as a forward with Goslings FC in the early 1940s. He joined Manchester United in 1943, turning professional in August 1944. However, because of the Second World War, he had to wait until 1946 for his league debut, by which time he had been converted into a wing half. He also made his England debut against Northern Ireland that year. With United, Cockburn won the 1948 FA Cup and the 1952 league title. Ashton-under-Lyne
Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England. The population was 45,198 at the 2011 census. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the north bank of the River Tame, in the foothills of the Pennines, east of Manchester. Evidence of Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Viking activity has been discovered in Ashton-under-Lyne. The "Ashton" part of the town's name probably dates from the Anglo-Saxon period, and derives from Old English meaning "settlement by ash trees". The origin of the "under-Lyne" suffix is less clear; it possibly derives from the Brittonic-originating word ''lemo'' meaning elm or from Ashton's proximity to the Pennines. In the Middle Ages, Ashton-under-Lyne was a parish and township and Ashton Old Hall was held by the de Asshetons, lords of the manor. Oldham is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, amid the Pennines and between the rivers Irk and Medlock, southeast of Rochdale and northeast of Manchester. It is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, which had a population of 237,110 in 2019. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, and with little early history to speak of, Oldham rose to prominence in the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture. Fielding (cricket)
Fielding in the sport of cricket is the action of fielders in collecting the ball after it is struck by the striking batter, to limit the number of runs that the striker scores and/or to get a batter out by either catching a hit ball before it bounces, or by running out either batter before they can complete the run they are currently attempting. There are a number of recognised fielding positions, and they can be categorised into the offside and leg side of the field. Fielding also involves preventing the ball from going to or over the edge of the field (which would result in runs being scored by the batting team in the form of a boundary). A ''fielder'' or ''fieldsman'' may field the ball with any part of his body. Ashton Cricket Club
Ashton Cricket Club is an English cricket team, based in the town of Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside, Greater Manchester. The club plays its home games at Rayner Lane, and competed in the Central Lancashire Cricket League LLfrom 1928 to 2015 doing the quadruple of winning the 1st and 2nd XI Championships, Wood Cup and Aggregate Cup in 1940. The club last won the prestigious Wood Cup in 1964 and 1965. From 2015 - 2017 the CLL amalgamated with the Saddleworth League to form the short-lived Pennine Cricket League.
