Henry Clarke (Australian Politician)
Henry Clarke (22 June 1822 – 22 November 1907) was an Australian businessman and politician in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Clarke was born in Maghera, County Londonderry, Ireland, he emigrated to New South Wales in 1841 and he farmed for a while at Broulee. He returned to Sydney and married Jane Rayner in 1847 and they eventually had eleven children. He and Robert Gee established a successful shipping agency and owned three ships operating between Sydney and Melbourne by 1861. In the early 1860s, he lived for a period at Bergalia station near Moruya, but returned to Sydney in 1865 and worked at his agency until 1894. Parliamentary career In 1860, he contested the seat of Eden and lost to Daniel Egan. In 1869 he re-contested Eden and won. He held the seat continually until the district was abolished in 1894 and he stood unsuccessfully for Moruya in 1894. William Wood (Australian Politician)
William Herbert Wood (4 November 1869 – 30 May 1953) was an Australian politician. Born at Wallhollow, Victoria, to storekeeper Henry Gibson Wood, he attended schools in Victoria and Sydney before completing his secondary education at Sydney Grammar School and studying law at the University of Sydney. He entered his father's business and became an accountant. In 1894 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Eden-Bombala; he was a Protectionist from 1895 to 1901, an Independent from 1901 to 1904 and a Liberal thereafter. He was a captain in the 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment in 1900. Eden-Bombala was abolished in 1904 and split between Monaro and Bega and Wood chose to contest Bega, which he represented until 1913. Thomas Rawlinson (politician)
Thomas Rawlinson (1847 – 21 July 1928) was an English-born Australian politician. Born in Kent to stonemason William Rawlinson and Eliza Underdown, he arrived in New South Wales with his family around 1852. He attended Sydney Grammar School and studied law at the University of Sydney, being admitted as a solicitor in 1870. He then moved to Bega, where he became partner in Rawlinson & Bland. On 14 November 1877 he married Sarah Ritchie, with whom he had eight children. In 1884 he was Bega's first mayor. James Garvan
James Patrick Garvan (2 May 1843 – 20 November 1896) was an Australian politician, Colonial Treasurer of New South Wales in 1889. Garvan was born in Cappagh, County Limerick, Ireland, son of Denis Bourke Garvan and Anne, Culhane. Garvan founded the North Shore Steam Ferry Co. Ltd., the City Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Ltd and the City Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd. He represented Eden in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. He was Minister of Justice in the Jennings ministry from February 1886 to January 1887, and Colonial Treasurer in the second Dibbs ministry from January to March 1889. He died at North Sydney on . John Kidd (politician)
John Kidd (1 September 18388 April 1919) was a politician, store-keeper and dairy farmer in New South Wales, Australia. Born in Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland, to boot manufacturer John Kidd and Elizabeth Souter, he received a limited education and was apprenticed at the age of thirteen as a baker and confectioner. In 1857 he arrived in New South Wales and became a baker in Sydney, with his bakery becoming a general store by 1876. In November 1860 he married Sophie Collier at Aberdeen, with whom he had three children. He visited the United Kingdom in 1877 and had a cattle property near Campbelltown. In 1880 Kidd was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Camden. he served until 1882 and then again from 1885 to 1887, 1889 to 1895, and 1898 to 1904. Charles James Roberts
Charles James Roberts , (29 March 1846 – 14 August 1925) was a publican and politician in colonial New South Wales and Postmaster-General of New South Wales. Roberts was the eldest son of Charles Warman Roberts, a publican of Sydney, New South Wales, and his wife Annie, ''née'' Marsden and educated at St James's Grammar School and Sydney Grammar School under William Stephens. Roberts went into business, becoming a licensed victualler. Roberts married in 1867 Lucretia, daughter of Abraham Abraham, of Sydney. Also in 1867 Roberts purchased the Crown and Anchor Hotel from his father, located on the corner of George and Market streets. Randwick is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Randwick is located 6 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Randwick. Dibbs Ministry (1889)
__NOTOC__ The second Dibbs ministry was the 25th ministry of the Colony of New South Wales, and was the second of three occasions of being led by the tenth Premier, George Dibbs. Dibbs was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1874. In a period of great financial stress for the Colony, this ministry covers just 49 days from 17 January 1889 until 7 March 1889. Dibbs took over as Premier on the first occasion in October 1885 following resignation of the Alexander Stuart due to ill-health, with his ministry lasting for 75 days. Dibbs served as Colonial Secretary in the Jennings ministry, before it too suffered budgetary pressures.
