Henry Walter Bates
Henry Walter Bates (8 February 1825, in Leicester – 16 February 1892, in London) was an English naturalist and explorer who gave the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. He was most famous for his expedition to the rainforests of the Amazon with Alfred Russel Wallace, starting in 1848. Wallace returned in 1852, but lost his collection on the return voyage when his ship caught fire. When Bates arrived home in 1859 after a full eleven years, he had sent back over 14,712 species (mostly of insects) of which 8,000 were (according to Bates, but see Van Wyhe) new to science. Bates wrote up his findings in his best-known work, ''The Naturalist on the River Amazons''. Life Bates was born in Leicester to a literate middle-class family. However, like Wallace, T.H. Henry Bates (politician)
Henry Bates of Shasta County, California was a politician affiliated with the American Party (the "Know Nothings"). He served as California state treasurer, 1856–1857. Prior to that, he was a member of the California State Assembly from the 13th district, 1855–1856. As state treasurer, he was impeached by California State Assembly and convicted in his impeachment trial before the California State Assembly, and resigned before his formal sentencing.. The investigation and ultimate removal of Bates from office was spurred by an article in the '' Sacramento Bee'', at the time of publication less than one week old. The initial accusation against Bates was that he had illegally deposited $88,000 ($2,386,172 in 2016 dollars) with Palmer, Cook & Co. for the purpose of paying the interest on state bonds in New York City in July 1856, without requiring security for this deposit; and that the interest was not paid. Henry Moore Bates (March 30, 1869 – April 15, 1949) was an American lawyer. He was dean of the University of Michigan Law School for 29 years. Born in Chicago, Bates received a Ph.B. from the University of Michigan in 1890 and a LL.B. from Northwestern University in 1892. After practicing law at Chicago, 1892–1903, he became Tappan Professor of Law at the University of Michigan and was made dean of the Law School there in 1910. General Sir Henry Bates (1813 – 2 March 1893) was a senior officer in the British Army. He was born the eldest son of Major Bates of the Royal Marines and educated at Charterhouse School. He joined the Army as an ensign 9 July 1829 and was promoted Lieutenant in the 38th Foot in 1833. In 1836 he transferred to the 82nd Foot and was promoted Captain in 1845, having spent 3 years in the West Indies on the staff of Lt.-General Samuel Ford Whittingham. He exchanged to the 98th Foot and became a Major in 1857. He spent 21 years in India as a staff officer, including terms as aide-de-camp to Sir Robert Henry Dick (killed 1846) and Sir Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough. He also acted as Military Secretary to John Elphinstone, 13th Lord Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay during the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
