Friedrich Markgraf
Friedrich Markgraf (1 February 1897 in Berlin-Friedenau – 8 March 1987 in Zurich) was a German botanist. Life and work After secondary school, Markgraf studied biology at the Friedrich Wilhelm University Berlin. In 1922 he was awarded a Ph.D. for a thesis on the subject of a botanic-ecological study of the Bredower forest near Berlin. After his habilitation he became first a professor of botany at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin and then at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and director of the Botanical Garden Munich-Nymphenburg (1956-1958). Markgraf was also visiting professor of botany at the University of Zurich. During his teaching and research activities, he was primarily concerned with questions of botanical systematics, plant morphology and phytogeography and he also undertook research while travelling in the Mediterranean. Walter S. Judd (born 1951) is an American botanist and taxonomist, and distinguished professor in the Department of Botany, University of Florida since 2009. Career Judd attended Michigan State University (B.S. 1973, M.S. 1974) and Harvard University (Ph.D. 1978). He became an assistant professor in the Department of Botany at the University of Florida (1978–1983), associate professor (1983–1991) and professor in 1991. He was president of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists 2000–2001. Plants are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Melastomataceae is a family of dicotyledonous flowering plants found mostly in the tropics (two-thirds of the genera are from the New World tropics) comprising c. 175 genera and c. 5115 known species. Melastomes are annual or perennial herbs, shrubs, or small trees. Description The leaves of melastomes are somewhat distinctive, being opposite, decussate, and usually with 3-7 longitudinal veins arising either from the base of the blade, plinerved (inner veins diverging above base of blade), or pinnately nerved with three or more pairs of primary veins diverging from the mid-vein at successive points above the base. Flowers are perfect, and borne either singly or in terminal or axillary, paniculate cymes. Montane ecosystems are found on the slopes of mountains. The alpine climate in these regions strongly affects the ecosystem because temperatures fall as elevation increases, causing the ecosystem to stratify. This stratification is a crucial factor in shaping plant community, biodiversity, metabolic processes and ecosystem dynamics for montane ecosystems. Dense montane forests are common at moderate elevations, due to moderate temperatures and high rainfall. At higher elevations, the climate is harsher, with lower temperatures and higher winds, preventing the growth of trees and causing the plant community to transition to montane grasslands, shrublands or alpine tundra.
