A modernist painter, she is known for her realist works and self-portraits, and also for her landscapes and still lifes. Throughout her long life, her work changed dramatically beginning with French-influenced realism and plein air painting. It gradually evolved towards portraits and still life paintings. She won the women's events at the 2021 IQFoil World Championships and the 2020, 2021 and 2022 IQFoil European Championships. Helene Mayer
Helene Julie Mayer (20 December 1910 – 10 October 1953) was a German-born fencer who won the gold medal at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, and the silver medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. She competed for Nazi Germany in Berlin, despite having been forced to leave Germany in 1935 and resettle in the United States because she was of Jewish descent. She was studying in an American University and later returned to Germany in 1952 where she died of breast cancer. Mayer had been called the greatest female fencer of all time, and was named by ''Sports Illustrated'' as one of the Top 100 Female Athletes of the 20th Century, but her legacy remains clouded. Helene Marie Fesenmaier (August 31, 1937 – June 21, 2013) was an American painter in acrylic, oil and pastel and sculptor. She initially disliked art when she was young but graduated from Smith College and Yale School of Art. Fesenamier was part of a group who established the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture in 1964. She spent time painting in the Netherlands and visited archaeological sites in Greece, Peru and Yucatán before taking up sculpting in Venezuela when she could not obtain suitable life models to paint and draw on. In 1970, Fesenmaier moved from Venezuela to London, as she combined painting and sculpting. She exhibited her works in major cities and art museums across the globe, and was posthumously inducted into the ISD 88 Hall of Fame in 2017.
