Heinz Dressel
Heinz Dressel (23 June 1902 – June 1997) was a German conductor. Life Born in Mainz, Dressel studied in Cologne with Hermann Abendroth, became Kapellmeister in Plauen, and later in Lübeck and General Music Director there in 1934. During the period of National Socialism, he conducted the 1934 premiere of Hugo Distler's setting of the Thingspiel ''Ewiges Deutschland'' by Wolfram Brockmeier. He was general music director in Münster Symphony Orchestra from 1941/42 to 1951, then in Freiburg im Breisgau (1951-1956) and later in Essen. Dressel was furthermore director of the Folkwang University in Essen from 1956, taking over the conducting class, the orchestra and the opera department there himself (the opera department only until 1958). Dressel founded the Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen in 1958. From 1964 to 1968 he was president of the Deutscher Musikrat. Dressel died in Essen. Thingspiel
A ''Thingspiel'' (plural ''Thingspiele'') was a kind of multi-disciplinary outdoor theatre performance which enjoyed brief popularity in pre-war Nazi Germany during the 1930s. A Thingplatz or Thingstätte was a specially-constructed outdoor amphitheatre built for such performances. About 400 were planned, but only about 40 were built between 1933 and 1939. History The idea of the Thingspiel movement was that the Volk would gather for völkisch meetings and for theatre and propaganda presentations. A ''Thing (assembly), Thing'' was an ancient judicial as well as social gathering of Germanic peoples, in an outdoor setting. Karl Gustav Fellerer
Karl Gustav Fellerer (7 July 1902 – 7 January 1984) was a German musicologist. His works include more than 600 scientific publications on catholic church music, Italian music from 1600 to the beginning of the 20th century, and music history of the 19th century. He wrote monographs on Palestrina, Handel, Mozart, and Max Bruch and was editor of several musical journals. He published the ''Kirchenmusikalisches Jahrbuch'' (Church Music Almanac) for 46 years, from 1930 until 1976. Fellerer was president of several musicology societies, including 16 years of the Joseph Haas Society. Career Fellerer was born on 7 July 1902 in Freising, Bavaria. He studied in Regensburg, then in Munich, where Joseph Haas was among his teachers, and in Berlin where in 1925 he gained a Ph.D. Following his habilitation, he then taught as Privatdozent at the University of Münster and the University of Fribourg where he gained full professorship in 1934. The Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia (german: Verdienstorden des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen) is a civil order of merit, of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia was founded on 11 March 1986. It is awarded to citizens representing all segments of the population who have made extraordinary contributions to the people and state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (german: Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or , BVO) is the only federal decoration of Germany. It is awarded for special achievements in political, economic, cultural, intellectual or honorary fields. It was created by the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Theodor Heuss, on 7 September 1951. Colloquially, the decorations of the different classes of the Order are also known as the Federal Cross of Merit (). It has been awarded to over 200,000 individuals in total, both Germans and foreigners. Since the 1990s, the number of annual awards has declined from over 4,000, first to around 2,300–2,500 per year, and now under 2,000, with a low of 1752 in 2011. Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen
The Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen is a chamber orchestra historically formed mostly by students of the Folkwang University in Essen, Germany, and other in North Rhine-Westphalia, to prepare them for a future position in an orchestra; however, it currently employs a core of permanent members from all over Germany and the world. Members are auditioned and trialed as in a professional orchestra, and, if successful, are offered a permanent contract up to the age of 35. It was founded in 1958 by the director of the ''Folkwangschule'' Heinz Dressel. More than 500 musicians were since employed in opera- and symphony orchestras in Germany and abroad. The orchestra is the only one to perform regularly in the historic Villa Hügel. Young soloists have been chosen to also enjoy a stage for their performances. The Folkwang University of the Arts is a university for music, theater, dance, design, and academic studies, located in four German cities of North Rhine-Westphalia.
