Hawthorne (Prairieville, Alabama)
Hawthorne, also known as the Browder Place, is a historic Italianate plantation house and historic district in Prairieville, Alabama, USA. This area of Hale County was included in Marengo County before the creation of Hale in 1867. Hawthorne is included in the Plantation Houses of the Alabama Canebrake and Their Associated Outbuildings Multiple Property Submission. NRIS Database, National Register of Historic Places. Retrieved 6 March 2008. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 7, 1994, due to its architectural significance. History Construction on Hawthorne began in 1818. It was eventually enlarged to a large house with over 30 rooms and a full basement by the Manning family, who used the forced labor of enslaved people to work the plantation. The property was later purchased by Dr. James Daniel Browder; by the end of the Civil War he had downsized most of the existing structure and completed the house as it stands today. Hawthorne House (Pine Apple, Alabama)
The Hawthorne House, also known as the Col. J. R. Hawthorne House, is a historic plantation house in Pine Apple, Alabama, USA. The two-story wood-frame house was built in 1854 for Joseph Richard Hawthorne by Ezra Plumb. Joseph Hawthorne was born in 1805 in North Carolina, but the family had relocated to Wilkinson County, Georgia by 1810. Hawthorne moved to Conecuh County, Alabama in the 1830s and finally settled in Pine Apple in the 1850s. He owned several large plantations in Conecuh and Wilcox counties. He died in Pine Apple in 1889. The house was sold out of the family after his death, but was brought back into the family when acquired in 1935 by Gladys Hawthorne Whitaker and her brother, Dr. Julian Hawthorne, a New York physician. They restored the house and it remained in the family until Mrs. Whitaker's death in 1980. The house was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1937. Nathaniel Hawthorne Boyhood Home
The Nathaniel Hawthorne Boyhood Home is a historic house at Raymond Cape Road and Hawthorne Road in Raymond, Maine. Built about 1812, the house was the childhood home of author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Its interior, now much altered, serves as a function space for a community organization dedicated to its preservation. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Description The Hawthorne Boyhood Home is located in northern Raymond, near the border with Casco to the north, at the southeast corner of Hawthorne Road and Raymond Cape Road. It is a rectangular -story wood-frame structure, with a side gable roof, brick end chimneys, and clapboard siding. Its main façade faces north toward Hawthorne Road, and is five bays wide, with an elaborate center entrance that has flanking sidelight windows and pilasters, and is topped by a wide Federal-period fan. Hawthorne Place is a historic house in Natchez, Mississippi, USA. History The land belonged to George Overaker, a planter, in the early 19th century. His daughter, Maria Overaker and his widow, Margaret Overaker, built Hawthorne Place from 1825 to 1827. It was purchased by Robert Dunbar II in 1833, who called it Hawthorne Place. The house was purchased by the McGehee family in 1928. By the late 1970s, it belonged to his daughter, Mrs. Hyde Dunbar Jenkins.
