Christopher Lehmann-Haupt (June 14, 1934 – November 7, 2018) was an American journalist, editor of the ''New York Times Book Review'', critic, and novelist, based in New York City. He served as senior Daily Book Reviewer from 1969 to 1995. Biography Lehmann-Haupt was born on June 14, 1934 in Edinburgh, Scotland, while his parents were visiting his mother's family. He was the eldest of three sons of Leticia Jane Hargrave Grierson, a Scottish teacher and editor from Edinburgh, and Hellmut Otto Emil Lehmann-Haupt, a German-born graphic arts historian and bibliographer. His family lived in New York City. Christopher had two younger brothers, Carl and Alexander. It was not until Lehmann-Haupt traveled to Berlin in 1947 to live with his father for a year that he learned about his father's Jewish ancestry. Paul Haupt
Hermann Hugo Paul Haupt (25 November 1858 in Görlitz – 15 December 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland) was a Semitic scholar, one of the pioneers of Assyriology in the United States. He studied at the universities of Berlin and Leipzig. In 1880 he became Privatdozent in the University of Göttingen and from 1883 to 1889 was assistant professor of Assyriology. In 1883 he became professor of Semitic languages at Johns Hopkins University, but until 1889 continued to lecture in the summer at Göttingen. He introduced the principle of the neogrammarians into Semitic philology, and discovered the Sumerian language in 1880. In addition to numerous smaller articles, he projected and edited the '' Polychrome Bible'', a critical edition of the Hebrew text of the Old Testament, and a new English translation with notes. Zoe Hauptová (February 9, 1929 – January 23, 2012) was a Czech slavicist, palaeologist, editor, translator, lecturer and editor of the ''Old Church Slavonic Dictionary'' (from 1973, its chief editor). Early life and education Hauptová was born in the city of Brno, and lived for a few years in Moravské Budějovice in the Vysočina Region, before moving with her mother to Prague. She attended a French grammar school there, from which she graduated in 1948. She then began studying Czech and Polish at the Charles University Faculty of Arts, before expanding her studies to Slavic philology in general, and particularly Old Slavonic, under the influence of linguistics professors Bohuslav Havránek, Vladimír Skalička, Vladimír Šmilauer and others who taught in the faculty at that time. Zygmunt Haupt
Zygmunt Haupt (5 March 1907, in Ułaszkowce, Podole – 10 May 1975, in Winchester, Virginia, United States) was a Polish writer and painter. Biography His father Ludwik was a school inspector, mother was a teacher. Initially he attended a school in Tarnopol. In 1925 he graduated from Kopernik gymnasium (high school) in Lwów and later studied engineering and architecture at the Lwów Politechnic. After the death of his father in 1928, he went to Paris, where he studied urban studies in 1931-1932 at Sorbonne. He started to write and paint there. After return to Lwów he became active in local cultural life. In 1939 he was mobilized into the army and fought during the Invasion of Poland in the 10th Brigade of Motorized Cavalry of colonel Stanisław Maczek. After the Soviet invasion of Poland Haupt fled to Hungary and later to France. He survived the siege of Dunkirk and was evacuated to England. He served in the Polish army until 1946. Moriz or Moritz Haupt (27 July 1808 – 5 February 1874), was a German philologist. Biography He was born at Zittau, Lusatia, Kingdom of Saxony, Saxony.
