Haslach Glaciation
The Haslach glaciation (german: Haslach-Kaltzeit), Haslach Glacial Stage (''Haslach-Glazial''), Haslach Complex (''Haslach-Komplex'') and Haslach Ice Age (''Haslach-Eiszeit'') are historical terms for a cold period of the Pleistocene epoch. Haslach was not included in the traditional glacial schema of the Alps by Albrecht Penck and Eduard Brückner. The glacial stage was first described around 1981 by A. Schreiner and R. Ebel. Its type region is the Haslach Gravels (''Haslach-Schotter'') in the area of the Riss-Iller-Lech Plateau. The Haslach cold period was thought to be preceded by the Günz-Haslach interglacial and followed by the Haslach-Mindel Interglacial. The name Haslach is absent from the 2016 version of the detailed stratigraphic table by the German Stratigraphic Commission. Cold Period
An ice age is a long period of reduction in the temperature of Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Earth's climate alternates between ice ages and greenhouse periods, during which there are no glaciers on the planet. Earth is currently in the Quaternary glaciation. The Pleistocene ( , often referred to as the ''Ice age'') is the geological Epoch (geology), epoch that lasted from about 2,580,000 to 11,700 years ago, spanning the Earth's most recent period of repeated glaciations. Albrecht Penck
Albrecht Penck (25 September 1858 – 7 March 1945) was a German geographer and geologist and the father of Walther Penck. Biography Born in Reudnitz near Leipzig, Penck became a university professor in Vienna, Austria, from 1885 to 1906, and in Berlin from 1906 to 1927. There he was also the director of the Institute and Museum for Oceanography by 1918. He dedicated himself to geomorphology and climatology, and he raised the international profile of the Vienna school of physical geography. With Eduard Brückner, he coauthored ''Die Alpen im Eiszeitalter'', a work in which the two scientists identified the four ice ages of the European Pleistocene ( Gunz, Mindel, Riss, Würm); these being named after the river valleys that were the first indication of each glaciation. Eduard Brückner
Eduard Brückner (29 July 1862 – 20 May 1927) was a geographer, glaciologist and climatologist. Biography He was born in Jena, the son of the Baltic-German historian Alexander Brückner and Lucie Schiele. After an education at the Karlsruhe gymnasium, beginning in 1881 he studied meteorology and physics at the University of Dorpat, graduating in 1885. He joined the Deutsche Seewarte (German Hydrographic Office) in Hamburg, then, following studies at Dresden and Munich, he became a professor at the University of Bern in 1888. The same year he married Ernestine Steine. In 1899, he was rector at the university. He moved back to Germany in 1904, becoming a professor at the University of Halle. Two years later in 1906, he was a professor at the University of Vienna. He died in Vienna. Professor Brückner was an expert on alpine glaciers and their effect upon the landscape. Type locality, also called type area, is the locality where a particular rock type, stratigraphic unit or mineral species is first identified. If the stratigraphic unit in a locality is layered, it is called a stratotype, whereas the standard of reference for unlayered rocks is the type locality. Riss (river)
The Riss (german: Riß) is a small river in Baden-Württemberg, south-western Germany, right tributary of the Danube. Its source is in Upper Swabia, between Bad Waldsee and Bad Schussenried. It flows north, through the town of Biberach an der Riss. It then flows into the Danube one mile north of Rißtissen between Ehingen and Erbach, approximately 20 km upstream from Ulm. Its total length is approximately 50 km. The Riss gave its name to the Riss glaciation, an ice age. Iller-Lech Plateau
The Iller-Lech Plateau (german: Donau-Iller-Lech-Platte), also known as the Upper Swabian Plateau (''Oberschwäbische Hochebene''), is one of the natural regions of Germany. Boundaries In the northwest the Iller-Lech Plateau borders on the Swabian Jura (unit D60 on the map) and, in the extreme northeast, on the Franconian Jura (unit D61 on the map). The boundary with these two natural regions is roughly formed by the course of the river Danube. The Gunz-Haslach interglacial (german: Günz-Haslach-Interglazial) and the Gunz-Haslach warm period (''Günz-Haslach-Warmzeit'') are historical terms for a hypothetical warm period of the Pleistocene in the Alpine region, between the Gunz and Haslach glaciations. The interglacial was defined as the erosion phase which follows the Günz and precedes the Haslach Glacial Stage. It thus corresponds to the stratigraphic gap between the Zeil gravels (''Zeiler Schotter'') in Swabia and Haslach gravels (''Haslacher Schotter'') northeast of the Rhine Glacier.
