Preacher Harry Powell
Harry Powell is a fictional character in Davis Grubb's 1953 novel '' The Night of the Hunter'', known as "Preacher". He was portrayed by Robert Mitchum in Charles Laughton's 1955 film adaptation, and by Richard Chamberlain in the 1991 TV movie. Preacher was voted 29th on the American Film Institute's top 50 villains of all time list. In the 1953 novel and 1955 film Powell is a self-declared itinerant preacher, who is also a con artist, and serial killer. He has the words "LOVE" tattooed on the knuckles of one hand and "HATE" tattooed on the other, a fact that he explains to his victims by using his hands in a sermon about the eternal struggle between good and evil. He preaches up and down the Ohio River in the late 1920s and early 1930s, gaining the trust of wealthy widows, marrying them and then killing them for their money. Henry Powell (22 July 1878 – 8 June 1930) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton Football Club, Carlton in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL). Harry James Powell (24 January 1853 – 26 November 1922) was a British glassmaker associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement. He was manager and chief glassmaker of James Powell and Sons from 1875 to 1919. He is best known for his innovations in the production of vessel glass, his contributions of new, medieval-like glass to the Arts and Crafts Movement, and the invention of innovative glass materials designed for the war effort during World War I. Biography Harry James Powell was the grandson of James Powell, founder of James Powell and Sons Glass Company (originally known as Whitefriars Glassworks) in London. Harrison 'Harry' William Powell (born 1 June 1995) is a Welsh former first-class cricketer. Powell was born at Monmouth in June 1995. He was educated at St Joseph's Roman Catholic High School, before going up to Cardiff University. While studying at Cardiff, he made two appearances in first-class cricket for Cardiff MCCU in 2014 against Glamorgan and Gloucestershire.
