Harry Bates (sculptor)
Harry Bates (26 April 1850 – 30 January 1899) was a British sculptor. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1892 as A.R.A. and was an active, if intermittent, member of the Art Workers Guild. He was a central figure in the British movement known as New Sculpture. Biography Bates was born on 26 April 1850 in Stevenage in Hertfordshire. He began his career as a carver's assistant, and before beginning the regular study of plastic art he passed through a long apprenticeship in architectural decoration working from 1869 for the firm of Farmer & Brindley. In 1879 he went to London and entered the South London School of Technical Art (formerly known as Lambeth School of Art, now the City and Guilds of London Art School). There he studied under Jules Dalou and won a silver medal in the national competition at South Kensington. In 1881, he was admitted to the Royal Academy schools, where in 1883 he won the gold medal and the travelling scholarship with his relief of ''Socrate ... Harry J. Bates (July 1890 – after 1912) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Birmingham. Bates was born in Sutton Coldfield Sutton Coldfield or the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, known locally as Sutton ( ), is a town and civil parish in the City of Birmingham, West Midlands, England. Hiram Gilmore "Harry" Bates III (October 9, 1900 – September 1981) was an American science fiction editor and writer. His short story "Farewell to the Master" (1940) was the basis of the well-known science fiction movie ''The Day the Earth Stood Still'' (1951). Biography Harry Bates was born Hiram Gilmore Bates III on October 9, 1900, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He began working for William Clayton in the 1920s as the editor of adventure pulp magazines. When Clayton proposed a period adventure magazine, Bates suggested several alternatives that he said would be easier to edit, and ''Astounding Science Fiction'' was the result. Bates, who was not a fan of science fiction, edited the magazine from its inception in January 1930 until March 1933, when Clayton went bankrupt and the magazine was sold to Street and Smith. Harry Bates Thayer (August 17, 1858 – September 3, 1936), was an American electrical and telephone businessman. Early life Thayer was born on August 17, 1858 in Northfield, Vermont. He was a son of James Carey Barroll Thayer (1824–1897) and Martha Jane (née Pratt) Thayer (1824–1869), a daughter of John A. and Sarah Pratt. His father, a son of Samuel White Thayer and Ruth (née Packard) Thayer, owned a clothing store and was a founder of Northfield Savings Bank. He was a descendant of Alden Thayer, Governor Brewster, and other early New England settlors. He was educated at Northfield High School in Northfield, Vermont. He then attended Norwich University (the Military College of Vermont) for 2 years before attending Dartmouth College, from which he graduated in 1879.
