Harmen Van Straaten
Harmen van Straaten (born 15 September 1958) is a Dutch author and illustrator. He has illustrated books by numerous Dutch and Belgian authors, including Carli Biessels, Bette Westera, Hilde Vandermeeren and Jaap ter Haar. In 2013, his book ''Je bent super... Jan!'' was the Kinderboekenweekgeschenk during the Boekenweek of that year. His uncle Peter van Straaten was a Dutch cartoonist and comics artist. Peter Van Straaten
Peter van Straaten (25 March 1935 – 8 December 2016) was a Dutch cartoonist and comics artist. He is best known for his political cartoons as well as his satirical observations of everyday people. He also had a newspaper comic strip '' Vader & Zoon'', which ran in ''Het Parool'' for almost two decades. Digital Library For Dutch Literature
The Digital Library for Dutch Literature (Dutch: Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren or DBNL) is a website (showing the abbreviation as dbnl) about Dutch language and Dutch literature. It contains thousands of literary texts, secondary literature and additional information, like biographies, portrayals etcetera, and hyperlinks. The DBNL is an initiative by the DBNL foundation that was founded in 1999 by the Society of Dutch Literature (Dutch: Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde). Building of the DNBL was made possible by donations, among others, from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (Dutch: Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek or NWO) and the Nederlandse Taalunie. From 2008 to 2012, the editor was René van Stipriaan. The work is done by eight people in Leiden (as of 2013: The Hague), 20 students, and 50 people in the Philippines who scan and type the texts. Carli Biessels
Carli Biessels (1936 – 16 September 2016) was a Dutch writer of children's literature. Biography Biessels was born and died in Nijmegen, where she studied pedagogy. Biessels worked in the field of children psychiatry and orthopedagogy. Before writing books for children Biessels wrote various stories for children's magazines ''Okki'' and ''Taptoe''. Biessels made her debut as author at 62 years of age with her book ''Twee druppels water'' (1998). The book was on the Longlist for the Gouden Uil award in 1999. In 2010, she won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs for her book ''Juwelen van stras''. She also received the Vlag en Wimpel award in 2001 for her book ''De feestrede'' and in 2007 for her book ''Irah en de dieren''. Her last book ''Ik moet je iets belangrijks vertellen'' (2016) was published posthumously. Bette Westera
Bette Westera (born 20 June 1958) is a Dutch children's writer. She has won numerous awards for her work. Career Westera made her debut as children's book author in 1999 with the book ''Wil je met me trouwen?'' Westera went on to win numerous awards for her work, including the Gouden Griffel and the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs in 2015 for her poetry collection ''Doodgewoon'' (with illustrations by Sylvia Weve). The previous time a poetry collection won the Gouden Griffel award was twenty years prior in 1995 (Ted van Lieshout's ''Begin een torentje van niks''). She also won several Zilveren Griffel awards as well as several Vlag en Wimpel awards over the years. Hilde Vandermeeren
Hilde Vandermeeren (born 25 September 1970, in Waregem) is a Belgian author of books for children and young people and psychological thrillers. Biography Vandermeeren studied psychology and works as a teacher for adults (psychology, creative writing). Since 2001 she has published almost fifty books for children and young people, many of which have been translated into Danish, German, Spanish, Korean, French and Chinese. She has won a number of awards and prizes, including a Zilveren Griffel, a Boekenwelp and a White Raven from the International Youth Library. Jaap Ter Haar
Jaap ter Haar (25 March 1922 – 26 February 1998) was a prolific Dutch author of children's literature. Career Early in his career ter Haar worked for the Radio Netherlands Worldwide. In addition to his day job, ter Haar made many Radio drama, radio plays for broadcaster Nederlandse Christelijke Radio Vereniging, NCRV featuring stories of the characters Saskia and Jeroen. These stories were later adapted and published as a book series. When Radio Netherlands Worldwide no longer permitted employees to earn income outside of work, ter Haar decided to become a full-time writer in 1952. Out of financial necessity, he published many books over the course of his career. In addition to the characters Saskia and Jeroen, he also wrote many book series featuring the characters Lotje, Eelke, and Ernstjan and Schnabbeltje. Boekenweek
In the Netherlands, the Boekenweek (; English: Book Week) is an annual "week" of ten days dedicated to Dutch literature. It has been held in March annually since 1932. Each Boekenweek has a theme. The beginning of the Boekenweek is marked by the ''Boekenbal'' (''book ball''), a gathering that is attended by writers and publishers. Events are held across the country during the Boekenweek, such as book signing sessions, literary festivals and debates. Publications Each year a well-known writer, usually Dutch or Flemish, is asked to write a book, usually a novella, called the ''Boekenweekgeschenk'' (''book week gift''), which is to be given away during the festival. Book shops give a copy of the Boekenweekgeschenk when a customer buys a book in the Dutch language; libraries also give copies of these books when a new person becomes a member.
