Harlem Academy School
Harlem Academy School, or School #2, was a school for African Americans in Tampa, Florida. Christina Meacham, Zacariah D. Greene and Blanche Armwood served as principals at the school. It was originally built with support from the Freedmens Bureau. History Classes were initially held at the Hillsborough County Courthouse in 1868 and the school was originally known as School #2. A school building was constructed in 1889 at Harrison and Morgan Streets in what was then known as the "Scrub" area of Tampa. It burned in 1892 and was replaced in 1895. As of 1904 there were 472 students. A brick building was erected for the school in 1912. It closed in 1964. The school participated in the Jamestown Exposition of 1907, a World's Fair, as part of the Negro Building exhibitions. Christina Meacham, one of the school's principals, helped organize the Florida Negro Teacher's Association. In 1927, the school was renamed in honor of Meacham. Harlem Academy
Harlem Academy is an independent, nonprofit, co-educational school (grades K-8) accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). It was founded in 2004. Academics and curriculum Primary The primary school includes kindergarten through second grade. Literacy Primary school students spend more than two hours each day focused on literacy, providing students with a literature-rich environment that offers many opportunities to learn and practice reading skills and strategies. Math Harlem Academy uses the Math in Focus Singapore math program, which focuses on teaching fewer concepts with greater depth and more complex problem solving than typical programs in the United States. Blanche Armwood
Blanche Mae Armwood (1890–1939), educator, activist and the first African-American woman in the state of Florida to graduate from an accredited law school. Armwood is also known for being the first Executive Secretary of the Tampa Urban League and as a founder of five Household Industrial Arts Schools for African-American women in five different states. Armwood High School in Seffner, Florida is named in her honor. Early life Blanche Armwood was born on January 23, 1890, in Tampa, Florida to Levin Armwood Jr. and Margaret Holloman. Born into a prominent middle-class family, she was the youngest of five children. Her mother was a skilled dressmaker and her father was Tampa's first black policeman in the late 1870s and a county deputy sheriff in 1895. Freedmens Bureau
The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, usually referred to as simply the Freedmen's Bureau, was an agency of early Reconstruction, assisting freedmen in the South. It was established on March 3, 1865, and operated briefly as a U.S. government agency, from 1865 to 1872, after the American Civil War, to direct "provisions, clothing, and fuel...for the immediate and temporary shelter and supply of destitute and suffering refugees and freedmen and their wives and children". Background and operations In 1863, the American Freedmen's Inquiry Commission was established. Two years later, as a result of the inquiry the Freedmen's Bureau Bill was passed, which established the Freedmen's Bureau as initiated by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Hillsborough County Courthouse
The Hillsborough County Registry of Deeds is located at 19 Temple Street in Nashua, one of the county seats of Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The two-story brick building was built in 1901 as a courthouse and county office building to a design by Boston architect Daniel H. Woodbury,Gustavus, A. C. "The Nashua of Today". Jamestown Exposition
The Jamestown Exposition was one of the many world's fairs and expositions that were popular in the United States in the early part of the 20th century. Commemorating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown in the Virginia Colony, it was held from April 26 to December 1, 1907, at Sewell's Point on Hampton Roads, in Norfolk, Virginia. It celebrated the first permanent English settlement in the present United States. In 1975, the 20 remaining exposition buildings were included on the National Register of Historic Places as a national historic district. Tampa () is a city on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. state of Florida. The city's borders include the north shore of Tampa Bay and the east shore of Old Tampa Bay.
