Hard Times (Peter Skellern Album)
''Hard Times'' is the fifth album by singer, songwriter and pianist Peter Skellern (1947–2017)) released in 1975 on the Island Records label. Despite much radio airplay, "Hard Times" failed as a single and the LP slipped into decades of obscurity. As a result of this commercial failure, Skellern changed record companies again, signing with Phonogram under their Mercury subsidiary and immediately enjoying a minor hit with a cover of " Love Is the Sweetest Thing".skellernhardtimes.blogspot.co.uk/ This album has now been officially re-issued on CD by Mint Audio Records on the 3 cd set, The Complete Island & Mercury Recordings. Peter Skellern
Peter Skellern (14 March 1947 – 17 February 2017) was an English singer-songwriter and pianist who rose to fame in the 1970s. He had two Hit song, top twenty hits on the UK Singles Chart - "You're a Lady" (1972), which typifies his signature use of brass bands and choral arrangements for a nostalgic and romantic feel, and "Hold On to Love (Peter Skellern song), Hold On to Love" (1975). In the 1980s, Skellern formed the band Oasis (1980s band), Oasis with Julian Lloyd Webber and Mary Hopkin and established a musical comedy partnership with Richard Stilgoe in cabaret. Over his career, Skellern wrote and performed music for film, television and stage, notably writing and starring in ''Happy Endings'', a 1981 BBC anthology series of comic musical plays. "Love Is the Sweetest Thing" is a popular song written in 1932 by British band leader and singer Ray Noble. Using guest vocalist Al Bowlly, Noble's recording was a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic, bringing Noble his first American success. It was published by Francis, Day & Hunter Ltd. Like most compositions published in the period (commonly called Tin Pan Alley songs), its main refrain (in thirty-two bar A-A-B-A form) is preceded with what were then called " sectional verses" or "introductory verses" which are usually omitted from early recordings and modern performances. Michael Robert Green (22 February 1944 – 11 January 2010) was an English rock and roll guitarist who played with The Pirates (with and without Johnny Kidd), Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, and Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. Chris Karan (born Chrisostomos Karanikis, 14 October 1939) is a Britain-based Australian jazz drummer and percussionist of Greek descent. Life and career Karan was born in 1939 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Karan played in The Three Out trio with Mike Nock and Freddy Logan in Sydney in the early 1960s. After moving to London in 1962, Karan became the drummer in the Dudley Moore Trio; he toured and recorded with Moore for many years, including the trio's appearances on the TV series '' Not Only But Also'' and the soundtrack of the 1967 movie '' Bedazzled''. Madeline Bell (born July 23, 1942) is an American soul singer, who became famous as a performer in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s with pop group Blue Mink, having arrived from America in the gospel show ''Black Nativity'' in 1962, with the vocal group Bradford Singers. Mayfair Recording Studios, earlier called Spot Studios or Ryemuse Studios, was a recording studio in London, England, located in Mayfair from the 1960s to 1981, then in Primrose Hill from 1981 until it closed in 2008. In the early years the studio was owned by Ryemuse Ltd and was called Spot Studios. It was located at 64 South Molton St, Mayfair, above the chemist shop. John Hudson worked there as chief engineer, joining the company from BBC Television, where he was employed in presentation broadcasting live sound for programmes such as ''Jimi Hendrix Color Me Pop'' and ''Match of the Day''.
