Hapjeong Station
Hapjeong Station () is a subterranean station of Seoul Subway Line 2 and Seoul Subway Line 6. The station is located just north of the Han River in Mapo-gu. The name of the subway station comes from its local name. The name of the area means clam well. The station is the southern end of Hongdae area, which is the centre of urban arts and indie music culture of Seoul. It is closest to the historical site of Jeoldu-san, a place where over 10,000 Koreans of the Roman Catholic faith were beheaded in 1866 under the orders of Daewon-gun. Yanghwajin Foreigners' Cemetery and the Holt International Children's Services are also located near the station. The northern end of Yanghwa Bridge is near the gates of the station. Seoul Metropolitan Subway Stations
Although each station of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway differs, most share certain characteristics. Stations range in size, from tiny local stations to large transportation hubs. Yanghwa Bridge
The Yanghwa Bridge (양화대교) is an eight lane bridge spanning the Han River in Seoul. The bridge connects Mapo-gu on the north side of the river to Yeongdeungpo-gu on the south side of the river. The bridge is buttressed by the eastern end of the island of Seonyudo, home to Seonyudo Park (선유도공원). The bridge is a combination of two bridges: the old bridge, originally called the "Second Han River Bridge" (제2한강교), completed in 1965; and the new bridge, completed in 1982. The old bridge was the first bridge built by Korean technology after independence in 1945 and served as the gateway from Seoul to the west coast. Due to increasing traffic, construction for an expansion started in 1979 and the new eight lane bridge was completed in February 1982. Yanghwajin Foreigners' Cemetery
Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery ( ko, 양화진외국인선교사묘원), also known as the Hapjeong-dong () International Cemetery, is a cemetery overlooking the Han River in the district of Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Designated in 1890 as a site for foreign missionaries by King Gojong, the site is currently open to the public from 9:00am to 6:00pm and is located next to Jeoldusan Martyr's Shrine. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 Koreans and 500 foreign nationals visit every year. History The death of Presbyterian minister John Heron in July 1890 prompted the small but growing international community in Seoul to look for a proper location for burials. Heungseon Daewongun (흥선대원군, 興宣大院君, 21 December 1820 – 22 February 1898; ), also known as the Daewongun (대원군, 大院君), Guktaegong (국태공, 國太公, "The Great Archduke") or formally Internal King Heungseon Heonui (흥선헌의대원왕, 興宣獻懿大院王) and also known to contemporary western diplomats as Prince Gung, was the title of Yi Ha-eung, the regent of Joseon during the minority of Emperor Gojong in the 1860s and until his death a key political figure of late Joseon Korea. Jeoldu-san
Jeoldu-san (Korean: 절두산, Hanja: 切頭山) (lit. ''beheading mountain'') is a rocky promontory overlooking the Han River in the district of Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Literal translation is "cutting off head mountain." A public memorial shrine is located at a historic ferry landing next to Yanghwajin Foreigners' Cemetery. History It came into use as an execution site for mostly Korean converts to Catholicism during the rule of the Daewon-gun, the regent of Joseon, in the late 1860s. The present memorial was built for the 100th anniversary of the Byeonin Persecution, and dedicated to the approximately 8,000 executions at the site. In 1984, Pope John Paul II visited the site, while Mother Teresa did so a year later. The memorial currently enshrines some 3,000 relics related to the martyrs. Mapo-gu
Mapo District () is one of the 25 districts of Seoul, South Korea. Mapo has a population of 381,330 (2015) and has a geographic area of 23.87 km2 (9.22 sq mi), and is divided into 24 '' dong'' (administrative neighborhoods).
