Robert Prunty
Robert Prunty is an American football coach. He is the head football coach at Hampton University, a position he has held since the 2018 season. Career Prunty was the head football coach for Gretna High School in Gretna, Virginia for several years. During his tenure, he led the program from suffering 44 consecutive losses from 1991 to 1995, to an 11–1 season in 2001. After his departure from Gretna, the program went on to win four state championships from 2003 to 2008. From Gretna, Prunty accepted a position as head football coach of Hargrave Military Academy. He was known for producing players that went on to the National Football League (NFL). Twenty-seven of Prunty's players moved up to the NFL, included two first-round draft picks; Peria Jerry and Branden Albert Branden Albert would go on to credit Hargrave for his success. 1922 Hampton Seasiders Football Team
The 1922 Hampton Seasiders football team was an American football team that represented Hampton Institute in the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) during the 1922 college football season. In their second year under head coach Gideon Smith, the Pirates compiled a 6–1 record and outscored opponents by a total of 52 to 25. Hampton was recognized as the 1922 black college national co-champion. Edward L. "Red" Dabney was the team captain. William S. Parker was the assistant coach. The team played its home games at Armstrong Field on the Institute's campus in Hampton, Virginia. Travis Coleman
Travis Lee Coleman (born January 4, 1980) is a former American football defensive back. He played college football at Hampton University. He was a member of the Chicago Bears, Berlin Thunder, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Albany Conquest, Kansas City Brigade, Alabama Vipers, Orlando Predators and New Orleans VooDoo. Early years and college career Coleman attended Goldsboro High School in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Coleman earned Second-team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as a strong safety for the Hampton Pirates. He recorded 147 tackles, 13 interceptions and 48 pass breakups over his four-year career. Darian Barnes
Darian Durrell Barnes (born February 28, 1980) is a former American football fullback in the National Football League (NFL) for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints. He played college football at Hampton University. Early years Barnes attended Toms River High School North. As a senior, he only played in 8 games, registering 148 carries for 1,163 yards and 15 touchdowns. He received second-team All-state by ''The Star-Ledger'' and first-team all-county honors at the end of the season. College career Barnes accepted a football scholarship from Rutgers University. Chris Baker (defensive Lineman)
Christopher Isaiah Baker (born October 8, 1987), nicknamed "Swaggy", is a former American football defensive tackle who played nine seasons in National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Hampton University and signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2009. Baker was also a member of the Miami Dolphins, Hartford Colonials, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cincinnati Bengals. College career Baker originally played football collegiately at Pennsylvania State University. Before the 2007 season, he was involved in two separate off-campus fights along with nine of his Penn State teammates. Jamal Benjamin Brooks (born November 9, 1976) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Rams. He played college football at Hampton University. Early years Brooks attended Granada Hills Charter High School, before moving on to Pasadena City College in 1994. He transferred to Hampton University during his freshman season. In his first year at Hampton, he collected 35 tackles and one sack. As a sophomore, he tallied 46 tackles and one forced fumble. As a junior, he had 26 tackles (4 for loss) and 2 fumble recoveries. As a senior middle linebacker, he posted 75 tackles (3 solo), 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and one interception. Charles Holston Williams
Charles Holston Williams (January 25, 1886 – 1978) was an American choreographer and professor of physical education. He was the organizer and first director of the Hampton Institute Creative Dance Group, the first national touring company composed of college students. Williams was also an associate professor and supervisor of the Physical Education Department at the Hampton Institute—now known as Hampton University—in Hampton, Virginia. Early life Williams was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on January 25, 1886. In 1904, he attended high school at Berea College, but the following year Williams transferred to Hampton Institute because the state general assembly had passed the Day Law, stating that blacks and whites could no longer attend the same schools. Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. CIAA institutions mostly consist of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The twelve member institutions reside primarily along the central portion of the East Coast of the United States, in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Since a majority of the members are in North Carolina, the CIAA moved its headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina from Hampton, Virginia in August 2015. 2006 Hampton Pirates Football Team
The 2006 Hampton Pirates football team represented Hampton University as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in the 2006 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by fifteenth-year head coach Joe Taylor and played their home games at Armstrong Stadium. They finished the season with a 10–2 overall record, won the MEAC championship with a 7–1 record in conference play and earned a berth to the first round of the NCAA Division I playoffs, where they were defeated by New Hampshire. Hampton won the black college football national championship as awarded by three selectors, with North Carolina Central chosen by five other selectors. Joe Taylor (American Football Coach)
Joe Taylor (born May 7, 1950) is an American college athletics administrator and former football coach. He is the athletic director at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, a position he has held since 2013. Taylor served as the head football coach at Howard University in 1983, Virginia Union from 1984 to 1991, Hampton University from 1992 to 2007, and Florida A&M University from 2008 to 2012, compiling a career college football coaching record of 232–96–4.
