The port city of Chattogram, which is the second largest city in Bangladesh, is located within this district. History Because of the natural harbour, Chattogram had been an important location for trade, drawing Arab traders as early as the 9th century CE. The region fell under the rule of kings from Arakan in the 16th and 17th centuries, but later, the Mughal Army under Shaista Khan conquered Chattogram. During the 17th century, the region also faced a lot of attacks by Portuguese pirates. The Mughals established Chattogram as a district in 1666. Chattogram is the 2nd largest district in Bangladesh by population and area. The Chattogram Hill Tracts were separated from Chittagong in 1860. Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), former Chittagong Metropolitan Police, is the chief law enforcement agency in Chattogram, the second largest city in Bangladesh. It was established in 1978 under the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Ordinance approved by the Government of Bangladesh. Thana or Thânâ ( bn, থানা literally "police station") mean the district controlled by a police station. History Thana was a subdistrict in the administrative geography of Bangladesh. The Local Government Ordinance of 1982 was amended a year later, redesignating and upgrading the existing ''thanas'' as ''upazilas''. Later in 1999 geographic regions under administrations of thanas were converted into upazilas. All administrative terms in this level were renamed from ''thana'' to ''upazila''. The word thana is now used to solely refer to police stations. Generally, there is one police station for each upazila. Sandwip ( bn, সন্দ্বীপ, Shondip) is an island located along the southeastern coast of Bangladesh in the Chattogram District. Along with the island of Urir Char, it is a part of the Sandwip Upazila. Description Sandwip is located in the north-east of the Bay of Bengal, near the port city of Chittagong. It is close to the mouth of the Meghna River in the Bay of Bengal and is separated from the Chittagong coast by Sandwip Channel. It has a population of nearly 700,000. Stranded Pakistanis in Bangladesh ( ur, , , bn, উদ্বাস্তু পাকিস্তানি, udbāstu pākistāni) are Urdu-speaking Muslim migrants with homelands in present-day Bihar (then part of British India) who settled in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) following the partition of India in 1947. This identification can encompass several groups of people. The first among them are Bihari Muslims. Although most of this population belonged to the Bihar Province of British India, there are many from other Indian states such as U.P. (United Provinces or later Uttar Pradesh).
