Betty Kuuskemaa
Marie-Elisabeth "Betty" Kuuskemaa (born Marie-Elisabeth Jõggis; 28 January 1879 – 19 December 1966) was an Estonian stage and film actress whose long career spanned over sixty years. Early life and education Betty Kuuskemaa was born Marie-Elisabeth Jõggis in Hageri in Rapla County to storekeeper Andres Jõggis and Wilhelmine Jõggis (''née'' Sööt), who was a seamstress. She was the fourth-born child of six siblings. Her three older siblings were Voldemar, born in 1872; Ludwig, born in 1875; and Alma Sophie, born in 1877. Her two younger sisters were Wilhelmine, born in 1880; and Emilie, born in 1882. She graduated secondary school in 1894 from the now defunct Tallinn Niclasen German Girls' School before traveling and studying abroad in Paris, Berlin, Vienna and London. Alfred Schmidt (weightlifter)
Alfred Schmidt (from 1936 Ain Sillak, 1 May 1898 – 5 November 1972) was an Estonia Estonia, formally the Republic of Estonia, is a country by the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland across from Finland, to the west by the sea across from Sweden, to the south by Latvia, a ...n featherweight weightlifter who won a silver medal at the 1920 Summer Olympics. Schmidt first trained in long-distance running, and took up weightlifting in 1919 while serving in the Estonian Army. Next year he won an Olympic silver medal, and in 1922 a national title. At the 1922 World Championships he was not allowed to compete, as he surpassed the body weight limit of his division, and hence acted as an official and referee. Aleksander Pallas
Aleksander Pallas (10 September 1887 – 7 January 1939) was an Estonian lawyer and politician who was the acting deputy mayor of Tallinn from 13 November to 25 November 1917. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Moscow State University. A lawyer in Tallinn, he worked alongside Otto Strandman as a city councilor. He participated in the Estonian War of Independence. Pallas was the first mayor after the German occupation of Estonia during World War I, serving as the acting deputy mayor for all of 12 days. Despite being temporary, the brief mayoralty set the stage for the building up of Tallinn as the capital of Estonia. He was succeeded by Aleksander Hellat. Laine Mesikäpp (27 February 1917 – 5 May 2012) was an Estonian film, radio and stage actress, singer and prolific collector and cataloguer of Estonian folk music. Early life and education Laine Mesikäpp was born in the small village of Adila in Kohila Parish, Rapla County, to Hans Mesikäpp Jr. and Ann Mesikäpp (''née'' Rammus) and grew up on a farm in the small neighboring borough of Hageri. She was the youngest of nine children. Her interest in traditional Estonian folklore and Estonian folk music began early in her childhood; her father Hans was a locally known storyteller and singer who always kept a pencil in his pocket to transcribe all local traditions, songs and stories. Later, the family home became a gathering place for folklorists, musicians and singers from all parts of Estonia, which left a lasting impression on her and added numerous songs from other regions to her repertoire.
