''The Cow'' ( fa, گاو, ''Gāv'' or ''Gav'') is a 1969 Iranian film directed by Dariush Mehrjui, written by Gholam-Hossein Saedi based on his own play and novel, and starring Ezzatolah Entezami as Masht Hassan. Some critics consider it the first film of the Iranian New Wave. Plot The story begins by showcasing the close relationship between a middle-aged Iranian villager Masht Hassan and his beloved cow. Hassan is married but has no children. His only valuable property is a cow that he cherishes as the only cow in the village. When Hassan must leave the village for a short time, the pregnant cow is found dead in the barn. Hassan's fellow villagers fear his reaction and cover up the evidence of the death and tell him upon his return that his cow has run away. Gholam Hossein Saedi
Gholām-Hossein Sā'edi MD ( fa, غلامحسین ساعدی, also transliterated as Gholamhoseyn Sa'edi and Ghulamhusayn Sa'idi; January 15, 1936 in Tabriz – November 23, 1985 in Paris) was a prolific Iranian writer. He published over forty books, representing his talents in the fiction genres of drama (under the pen name ''Gohar Morad'' or ''Gowhar Murad,'' according to Library of Congress arabicised transliteration), the novel, the screenplay, and the short story in addition to the non-fiction genres of cultural criticism, travel literature and ethnography. Many consider the screenplay for ''Gāv, Gav'' ("The Cow"), Dariush Mehrjui's 1969 film, to be Sa'edi's Masterpiece, magnum opus as it ushered in the Iranian New Wave, New Wave Iranian cinema. Parviz Fannizadeh
Parviz Fannizadeh ( fa, پرویز فنیزاده, January 27, 1938 – February 24, 1980) was an Iranian actor, film and television star. He was one of Iran's first method actors. Fanizadeh is best known for his roles as Mash Ghaasem in ''My Uncle Napoleon'' aka '' Daii jan Napelon'' and Hekmati in ِ''Downpour''. Career Fannizadeh was born and raised in Tehran. He had a passion for acting and started his career at an early age. He graduated from the Iranian Academy of the Dramatic Arts in 1961. In 1966 he played his first role. He won the best actor prize at the Fifth Iranian National Film Festival ''"Sepas"'' in 1973 for portraying Mr. Hekmati in Bahram Bayzai's film '' Downpour'' (''Ragbar'') (1972). Dariush Mehrju'i ( fa, داریوش مهرجویی , born 8 December 1939, also spelled as ''Mehrjui'', ''Mehrjoui'', Mehrjooi, and ''Mehrjuyi'') is an Iranian film director, screenwriter, producer, editor and a member of the Iranian Academy of the Arts. Mehrjui was a founding member of the Iranian New Wave movement of the early 1970s. His second film, ''Gaav'', is considered to be the first film of this movement, which also included Masoud Kimiai and Nasser Taqvai. Chicago International Film Festival
The Chicago International Film Festival is an annual film festival held every fall. Founded in 1964 by Michael Kutza, it is the longest-running competitive film festival in North America.
