Gösta Berlings Saga (film)
''The Saga of Gösta Berling'' ( sv, Gösta Berlings saga) is a 1924 Swedish romantic drama film directed by Mauritz Stiller and released by AB Svensk FAB Svensk Filmindustri, starring Lars Hanson, Gerda Lundequist and Greta Garbo in her domestic film breakthrough. It is based on Swedish Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf's 1891 debut novel ''Gösta Berlings saga''. The film is also known as ''Gösta Berling's Saga'', ''The Story of Gösta Berling'' and ''The Atonement of Gösta Berling''. Plot The story follows several major characters, including Gosta Berling himself and others, especially women, whose lives touch him and that he touches. Mauritz Stiller
Mauritz Stiller (born Moshe Stiller, 17 July 1883 – 18 November 1928) was a Swedish film director of Finnish Jewish origin, best known for discovering Greta Garbo and bringing her to America. Stiller had been a pioneer of the Swedish film industry, writing and directing many short films from 1912. When Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer invited him to Hollywood as a director, he arrived with his new discovery Greta Gustafsson, whose screen name Greta Garbo is believed to have been his suggestion. After frequent disagreements with studio executives at MGM and Paramount Pictures, Stiller returned to Sweden, where he died soon afterwards. Life Moshe Stiller was born in Helsinki. Svend Kornbeck
Svend Kornbeck (3 July 1869 – 30 October 1933) was a Danish stage and film actor. Early life and career Kornbeck was born in Copenhagen, the son of painter Johan Peter Kornbeck (1837–1894) and his wife Anna Nathalie Kornbeck (''née'' Trolle) (1849–1930). He was employed in various Copenhagen and provincial theaters; the Dagmar Theatre, Det Ny Teater and the Odense Teater. In 1912 he debuted as a film actor and then starred in some 30 films, all but one were with the Nordisk Film company. One of Kornbeck's more memorable film roles is that of Christian Berg in the 1924 Swedish silent film '' The Saga of Gosta Berling'', directed by Mauritz Stiller. Oscar Byström (31 December 1857 – 4 June 1938) was a Swedish actor. Byström debuted in 1884 at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. During 1885–1886, when he was involved in the theater company of Oscar Sternvall-Skottes . Byström was employed at the Royal Dramatic Theatre from 1890 to 1893. Karin Swanström (June 13, 1873 – July 5, 1942) was a Swedish actress, producer and director. Early life Swanström was born in St. Olai congregation in Norrköping. Little is known of her life before she was accepted for the Royal Dramatic Theatre school in 1890 when she was seventeen. Already in school her acting ability was acknowledged by her performance in two student plays. In 1892 she left the Royal Dramatic Theater school and was employed by The Royal Dramatic Theater and was in the ensemble for five years. In 1897 Karin Swanström went from the Royal Dramatic Theater to Selander Company, that was run by Hjalmar and Concordia Selander, for a year and then she went to Swedish Theater Company in Helsinki in 1899. Jenny Matilda Elisabet Hasselquist, also spelled Hasselqvist (31 July 1894 – 8 June 1978), was a Swedish prima ballerina, film actress, and ballet teacher. Biography Jenny Matilda Elisabet Hasselquist was born in Stockholm on 31 July 1894 to Johannes Johansson Hasselquist and Sofia Katarina Hasselquist. She had two older brothers, Wilhelm (1887–1959), and Gerhard (1889–1950). She attended the Swedish Opera's ballet school from 1906 and performed with the Royal Ballet from 1910. In 1913, Michel Fokine noticed her talents and ensured she obtained solo roles in ''La Sylphide'' and ''Cleopatra''. She became a prima ballerina at the Royal Ballet in 1915. In 1920, Hasselquist starred in Rolf de Maré's Ballets suédois in Paris. A talented dancer, she had a flair for the modern idiom. Ellen Hartman (born Helena Elisabeth Florentina Hedlund, 31 July 1860 in Stockholm – 4 January 1945 in Stockholm), was a Swedish actress.
