Göschenen
Göschenen (German, it, Casinotta, rm, Caschanuttais) a village and municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. It sits at the northern end of the Gotthard tunnel. The Göschenen riots (1875) saw Urner troops opening fire on Italian miners demonstrating for better working conditions and wages on the tunnel's construction site. Name Göschenen is first mentioned in 1280 as ''Gesschenden''. The name is from Rumantsch ''*cascina'' (modern ''caschigna'') "alpine hut", from Latin ''capsum'' "corral", but influenced by the word for cheese, ''cascio''. Göschenen Railway Station
Göschenen railway station is a railway station in the Swiss canton of Uri and municipality of Göschenen. Situated on the original line of the Gotthard railway, at the northern mouth of the Gotthard Tunnel, the station is also the junction point with the Schöllenenbahn. Most trains on the Gotthard route now use the Gotthard Base Tunnel and do not pass through Göschenen station. The Gotthard railway connects Göschenen via Immensee with Zürich in the north, and via the Gotthard Rail Tunnel and Chiasso with Milan in the south. The importance of the line decreased in the 2010s with the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel (2016) and Ceneri Base Tunnel (2020), creating a new fast route between Central Switzerland and Ticino. Südostbahn now runs hourly panoramic service over the route. The Schöllenenbahn, a very short metre gauge branch line, operates between Göschenen and Andermatt, just to the south. Schöllenen Gorge
Schöllenen Gorge (german: Schöllenenschlucht; Schöllenen) is a gorge formed by the upper Reuss in the Swiss canton of Uri between the towns of Göschenen to the north and Andermatt to the south. It provides access to the St Gotthard Pass. Enclosed by sheer granite walls, its road and railway require several spectacular bridges and tunnels, of which the most famous is a stone bridge known as the ''Teufelsbrücke'' ("Devil's Bridge"). Geology The lower Urseren marks the boundary of the Aar massif with the autochthonous sediment of the Gotthard nappe ("Urseren-Zone"). Andermatt ( rm, ) is a mountain village and municipalities of Switzerland, municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. Andermatt railway station is a railway station and junction on the metre gauge Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO), serving the town and municipality of Andermatt, in the canton of Uri, Switzerland. The station is connected, via the Furka Pass, with Brig and Visp in the canton of Valais, and, via the Oberalp Pass, with the western terminus of the Rhaetian Railway at Disentis/Mustér, in the canton of Graubünden. Schöllenenbahn
The Furka Oberalp Railway (german: link=no, Furka Oberalp Bahn) is a narrow gauge mountain railway in Switzerland with a gauge of . It runs in the Graubünden, Uri and Canton of Valais. Since January 1, 2003, it is part of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn when it merged with the BVZ Zermatt-Bahn. The line begins in Disentis in the canton of Graubünden, where there is a connection to the Rhätische Bahn (RhB). It then runs over the Oberalp Pass to Andermatt in the canton of Uri. Through the Furka Base Tunnel it reaches the Goms District area and Brig in the canton of Valais. In Brig, it connects to the BVZ Zermattbahn since 1930. The first half of the line was opened by the French company ''Brig-Furka-Disentis Bahn'' (BFD) in 1914. Trains could go as far as Gletsch, starting from Brig.
