Valery Belenky
Valeri Vladimirovich Belenki (russian: Валерий Владимирович Беленький, german: Valeri Belenki; born 5 September 1969) is a retired Azerbaijani artistic gymnast who competed in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. Career Belenki was born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, Soviet Union (present day Azerbaijan), in a Jewish family. He competed for the Soviet Union/ Unified Team until 1992 when this federation was disbanded following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Belenki's greatest achievements are the team gold and all around bronze he won with the Unified Team in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Belenky also won gold in the pommel horse event at the 1991 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, where he competed for the USSR. Gymnastics At The 1992 Summer Olympics
At the 1992 Summer Olympics, two different gymnastics were contested: artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. The artistic gymnastics events were held at the Palau Sant Jordi from July 26 through August 2. The rhythmic gymnastics event were held at the Palau dels Esports de Barcelona from August 6 through 8th. In artistic gymnastics, the ''New Life'' rule was introduced at the Olympic Games. Under this rule, a gymnast's scores in the compulsory and optional rounds were not carried over to the all-around and apparatus finals. A gymnast's final standing in both the all-around and apparatus finals was based solely on the scores received by the gymnast during those competitions. These are the results of the men's team all-around competition, one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The compulsory and optional rounds took place on July 20 and 22 at the Georgia Dome. The 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta had begun a significant overhaul of artistic gymnastics in general, especially with regards to the format of competition on all events. One particularly major development was the total elimination of compulsories for all artistic gymnasts in all future competitions after these Olympics. Also, these would be the first and last Olympics to use the “7–6–5” format, which meant “SEVEN members where SIX would compete and the FIVE top scores would count towards team total” on each apparatus, for their team competitions, and for teams to consist of seven members.
