Gymnastics At The 1972 Summer Olympics
At the 1972 Summer Olympics, fourteen different artistic gymnastics events were contested, eight for men and seven for women. All events were held at the Sports Hall in Munich from 27 August through 1 September. Format of competition The gymnastics competition at the 1972 Summer Olympics was carried out in three stages: *Competition I - The team competition/qualification round in which all gymnasts, including those who were not part of a team, performed both compulsory and optional exercises. The combined scores of all team members determined the final score of the team. The thirty-six highest scoring gymnasts in the all-around qualified to the individual all-around competition. Olympiahalle
Olympiahalle is a multi-purpose arena located in Am Riesenfeld in Munich, Germany, part of Olympiapark. The arena is used for concerts, sporting events, exhibitions or trade fairs. The seating capacity for the arena varies from 12,150 up to 14,000. History In the past, it served as a part-time home for the defunct ice hockey team EC Hedos München. Olympiahalle opened in 1972 and was the venue for gymnastics and handball events at the 1972 Summer Olympics. The current seating capacity of 15,500 was set after a massive overhaul was completed in 2009. A new VIP area, a restaurant and an underground second arena ("Kleine Olympiahalle") with a capacity of up to 4,000 was integrated in the new complex. Mikhail Voronin
Mikhail Yakovlevich Voronin (russian: Михаил Яковлевич Воронин; 26 March 1945 – 22 May 2004) was a Soviet and Russian gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He won seven medals, including two gold, at the 1968 Summer Olympics, as well as two silver medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Career Voronin trained at Dynamo in Moscow and became an Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1966. Elvira Saadi
Elvira Fuadovna Saadi (born January 2, 1952) is a retired gymnast from the former Soviet Union who is now an elite gymnastics coach in Canada. As a member of the Soviet Union's women's gymnastics team, Saadi shared in the team gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. She placed 8th in the all-around at the 1972 Olympics and 7th all-around at the 1976 Olympics. Saadi won the all-around, balance beam and floor exercise at the 1973 USSR national championships. That year, she tied for first on vault at the 1973 World University Games, where she also placed 3rd in the all-around. Antonina Koshel
Antonina Vladimirovna Koshel (russian: Антонина Владимировна Кошель, be, Антаніна Уладзіміраўна Кошаль; born 20 November 1954) is a retired Soviet artistic gymnast. She competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in all artistic gymnastics events and won a gold medal in the team allround competition. Individually her best achievement was 12th place on the balance beam and vault. Koshel began gymnastics after following her older sister, Natalia, into the gym. However, Koshel preferred ballet over gymnastics, but she was not accepted into a local ballet school. After that, she moved to the Minsk sports boarding school to train in gymnastics. Olga Korbut
Olga Valentinovna Korbut, ; russian: Ольга Валентиновна Корбут, group=nb (born 16 May 1955) is a former gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union. Nicknamed the " Sparrow from Minsk", she won four gold medals and two silver medals at the Summer Olympic Games, in which she competed in 1972 and 1976 for the Soviet team, and was the inaugural inductee to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1988. Korbut retired from gymnastics in 1977 at the age of 22, considered young for gymnasts of the period, but her influence and legacy in gymnastics was far reaching. Lyubov Viktorovna Burda (russian: Любовь Викторовна Бурда; born 11 April 1953) is a retired Soviet artistic gymnast. Career In 1967 Burda placed 3rd in the all-around at the USSR Championships (also the USSR Spartakiade that year) as well as placing 2nd on balance beam and floor exercise. At the end of the year, Burda won the junior all-around competition at the USSR Cup as well as winning gold medals in the balance beam and floor exercise finals, which combined junior and senior gymnasts. Tamara Lazakovich
Tamara Vasilyevna Lazakovich (russian: Тамара Васильевна Лазакович; 11 March 1954 – 1 November 1992) was a Soviet artistic gymnast who competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Described as a "perky sparrow" with a "purity of line", Lazakovich was spotted by her compatriot, Olympic champion Larisa Petrik, in 1961 and brought to prominent coaches in the Belarusian system. Karin Büttner-Janz
Karin Büttner-Janz ( Janz, born 17 February 1952) is a German medical doctor who won world and Olympic gold medals in artistic gymnastics for East Germany. From 1990 to 2012, she was chief physician of clinics in Berlin, Germany. She has a foundation named Spinefoundation. Ludmilla Ivanovna Tourischeva (Russian: Людми́ла Ива́новна Тури́щева; also transliterated as Ludmilla Turischeva, Ludmilla Tourischcheva, and Ljudmila Turichtchieva, born 7 October 1952) is a former Russian gymnast, Ukrainian gymnast coach, and a nine-time Olympic medalist for the Soviet Union. Wolfgang Thüne (born 8 October 1949) is a German former gymnast. He competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in all artistic gymnastics events and won a bronze medal with the East German team.
