Gymnastics At The 1896 Summer Olympics
At the 1896 Summer Olympics, eight gymnastics events, all for men, were contested in Panathinaiko Stadium. They were organized and prepared by the Sub-Committee for Wrestling and Gymnastics. Events took place on April 9, April 10, and April 11, 1896. There were 71 competitors from 9 nations (including 52 from Greece) that took part in gymnastics. Panathinaiko Stadium
The Panathenaic Stadium ( el, Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο, Panathinaïkó Stádio, ), as spelled by Philostratus. or ''Kallimarmaro'' (Καλλιμάρμαρο, , lit. "beautiful marble") is a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. One of the main historic attractions of Athens, it is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. A stadium was built on the site of a simple racecourse by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) BC, primarily for the Panathenaic Games. It was rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus, an Athenian Roman senator, by 144 AD it had a capacity of 50,000 seats. After the rise of Christianity in the 4th century it was largely abandoned. The stadium was excavated in 1869 and hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. After being refurbished, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and was the venue for 4 of the 9 contested sports. Nikolaos Andriakopoulos
Nikolaos Andriakopoulos ( el, Νικόλαος Ανδριακόπουλος; 1878 in Patras – after 1896) was a Greek gymnast. He was a member of Panachaikos Gymnastikos Syllogos, that merged in 1923 with Gymnastiki Etaireia Patron to become Panachaiki Gymnastiki Enosi. Olympics performances Andriakopoulos competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics, Athens, in the rope climbing event. He and countryman Thomas Xenakis were the only two out of the five entrants to climb all the way to the top of the 14 meter rope. Andriakopoulos finished in 23.4 seconds, defeating Xenakis to claim the gold medal. This would be the last Greek gold medal in gymnastics until Ioannis Melissanidis won gold in the floor exercise in 1996. He also entered the team parallel bars event. Louis Zutter
Jules Alexis "Louis" Zutter (2 December 1865 – 10 November 1946) was a Swiss gymnast. He competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. Zutter won one of the events, the pommel horse. He was also the runner-up in two more events, the vault and the parallel bars. In addition, he competed in the horizontal bar event, but without success. He was born in Les Ponts-de-Martel and lived in Peseux, where he was a member of the gymnastics club ''La Société des Amis gymnastes de Neuchâtel''. In 1893 his father was hired as a trainer in Panachaikos Gymnastikos Syllogos and Louis became a member of the club. After his success in the 1896 Olympics, he was honoured in Patras with the Greek athletes by the city. Dimitrios Loundras
Dimitrios Loundras ( el, Δημήτριος Λούνδρας; 6 September 1885 in Athens – 15 February 1970) was a Greek gymnast and naval officer who competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. He was the last surviving participant of these Games. Loundras competed in the team parallel bars event. In that competition, Loundras was a member of the Ethnikos Gymnastikos Syllogos team that placed third of the three teams in the event, giving him a bronze medal. At 10 years 218 days he remains the youngest medalist and competitor in Olympic history, if one discounts an unknown competitor, who competed as coxswain for the Dutch coxed pair rowing team in the 1900 Olympics, (which for this reason is considered a mixed team), believed to be a French boy from 7 to 10 years old, but who according to Dutch expert Tony Bijkerk he was more likely nearer 12 years of age.
