Gymnastics At The 1980 Summer Olympics
At the 1980 Summer Olympics, fourteen different artistic gymnastics events were contested, eight for men and six for women. All events were held at the Sports Palace of the Central Lenin Stadium in Moscow from July 20 through 25th. Several teams who had qualified to compete were absent as a result of the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott, including the United States, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, and West Germany. For the first time in Olympic competition, in event finals for the vault an average of two vaults was used as the final score, rather than the best of two vaults. Format of competition The gymnastics competition at the 1980 Summer Olympics was carried out in three stages: *Competition I - The team competition/qualification round in which all gymnasts, including those who were not part of a team, performed both compulsory and optional exercises. Zoltán Magyar
Zoltán Magyar (born 13 December 1953) was the world's leading pommel horse gymnast in the 1970s. In this event he won two Olympic, three world, three European and two World Cup titles. Magyar had two moves named after him, the Magyar spindle (turning the body in the opposite direction from the circling legs) and the Magyar travel (crosswise circling travel down the horse). He won the Olympic gold in 1976 and 1980, world championships gold in 1974, 1978 and 1979, European championships gold in 1973, 1975 and 1977; and World Cup gold in 1975 and 1978. Lutz Hoffmann
Lutz Hoffmann (30 January 1959 – 5 December 1997) was an East German gymnast and Olympic silver medalist. Early life and training He began gymnastics training at the age of five. Beginning in 1976, he trained with the SC Dynamo Berlin. His younger brother Ulf Hoffmann was likewise an Olympic gymnast. In their youth, they shared a boarding school room during their time with SC Synamo Berlin. Career In 1979 Hoffmann became GDR champion in the floor exercise and finished second in the vault. At the world championships in the same year his team finished fourth. Next year they won a silver medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
