"Gwendolyne" (), sometimes spelt "Gwendoline", is a song composed and recorded by Spaniards, Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, co-written by Leo Johns. It is best known as the entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1970, held in Amsterdam. The single was also one of the final records to be issued in the by then obsolete 78 RPM format, only being released in that format in Columbia. Background The song is a ballad, with both music and lyrics co-written by Iglesias himself, written about his first girlfriend, the titular Gwendolyne, a French girl whom he met at the age of 20 while still a law student and a goalkeeper for Spanish Association football, football team Real Madrid Castilla. Spain took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 1971. The country was represented by Karina with the song "En un mundo nuevo". Karina was selected through the competition ''Pasaporte a Dublín'' ("Passport to Dublin"), and the song she would sing in Dublin was internally chosen once the national final was over. María Isabel Llaudes Santiago (born 4 December 1945), better known by her stage name Karina, is a Spanish singer who had her biggest success in the late 1960s until the mid-1970s. She was born in Jaén, Andalusia to Trinidad Santiago and Salvador Llaudes. The Eurovision Song Contest 1971 was the 16th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Dublin, Ireland, following the country's victory at the with the song "All Kinds of Everything" by Dana. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster (RTÉ), the contest was held at the Gaiety Theatre on 3 April 1971, and was hosted by Irish television presenter Bernadette Ní Ghallchóir. Eighteen countries participated in the contest, equalling the record of the 1965 and 1966 editions. Austria returned after their two-year absence, while Finland, Norway, Portugal and Sweden all returned after having boycotted the competition the previous year.
