Gwen Plumb
Gwendoline Jean Plumb AM BEM (2 August 1912 – 5 June 2002), was an Australian performer of international appeal, actress and comedian active in literally every form of the art genre, (except circus) including revue, pantomime, vaudeville, interviewing, stage, radio, game shows, live appearances, television soap opera and mini-series and made-for-TV film. She was considered the Grand Dame of Australian entertainment, best known to local and international audiences in serial ''The Young Doctors'' as gossip Ada Simmonds, the ill-fated '' Richmond Hill'' as Mum Foote and the pilot of ''Home and Away'' as Doris Peters. Stanmore, New South Wales
Stanmore is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia 6 kilometres south west of the Sydney central business district. It is part of the local government area of the Inner West Council. It is known for its long strip of shops running along Parramatta Road (Great Western Highway). History Prior to settlement by the British the site was populated by coastal aborigines known as the Gadigal clan of the Eora people. Land in the present Stanmore area was first allocated to colonial officers by Governor Arthur Phillip between 1793 and 1810. Stanmore was named by a saddler, John Jones, who settled on the land in 1835 where Newington College now stands and called it the Stanmore Estate. Reginald James Watson (27 August 1926 – 8 October 2019) was an Australian television producer and screenwriter. He was executive producer on ''Crossroads (British TV series), Crossroads'' and created Australian media exports serials such as ''Prisoner (TV series), Prisoner'', ''Neighbours'', ''The Young Doctors'' and ''Sons and Daughters (Australian TV series), Sons and Daughters''. Career Watson was born on 27 August 1926, and grew up on a sugar farm in Queensland. He began his career as an actor at the age of sixteen on Australian radio firstly as an actor and then as an announcer, before moving to the UK in 1955. He was soon hired by Associated TeleVision, ATV and in 1956, joined Ned Sherrin and Noele Gordon in Birmingham to establish the base of ATV Midlands where his job was as Head Of Light Entertainment. ''Adventure Unlimited'' is a 1965 Australian anthology TV series. It was produced by Lee Robinson and associate produced by Joy Cavill. The directors included Ken Hannam. It was made by Waratah Film Productions a short lived company that came out of an unsuccessful attempt to gain a third commercial television licence. It has been described as "surprisingly obscure" considering the talent involved. Broadcast history The series was made in 1963, but was not shown in Sydney until 1965, airing on Channel Ten on Friday nights at 7.30. An episode appears to have aired on Thursday, 30 September 1965. ''Women's World'' (also known as ''Woman's World'') was an Australian television series which aired from 1956 to 1963 on ABC. Originally broadcast in Sydney and later Melbourne, it would appear the last couple years (and first few months) of the series were only broadcast in Sydney. Some editions were made (and broadcast live) in Melbourne, but many were made in Sydney, and often telerecorded for Melbourne broadcast (see below). The series was aimed at the housewives. For example, the 6 October 1959 episode was hosted by Joy Wren, featured a segment on cooking problems, a segment on knitwear, and music provided by Freddie Philips, a pianist. The Sydney-produced episode broadcast in Melbourne on 4 November 1959 featured Gwen Plumb as host, a segment on fashions in nylon, a book review and a piano interlude by Marie van Hove. ''Ginger Meggs'', Australia's most popular and longest-running comic strip, was created in the early 1920s by Jimmy Bancks. The strip follows the escapades of a red-haired prepubescent mischief-maker who lives in an inner suburban working-class household. While employed at ''The Bulletin'', Bancks submitted cartoons to the ''Sydney Sunday Sun'', where he began his ''Us Fellers'' strip in 1921 in the "Sunbeams" section of the ''Sunday Sun''.
