Gwelup, Western Australia
Gwelup is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia 12 km north of Perth's central business district (CBD) along the Mitchell Freeway. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. History and environment The name "Gwelup" refers to a small swamp located within the southern portion of the suburb. It was derived from the Noongar word "Gwelgannow" meaning "to shift position". Hence, Lake Gwelup was referred to as "the lake that shifts position". The name first appears in Lands Department records in 1878 as "Gwelup Swamp". Situated on the western side of the suburb of Gwelup, lies the remainder of the once broader Lake Gwelup and accompanying bushland nature reserve. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. The City of Stirling is a local government area in the northern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about north of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and has a population of over 223,000, making it the largest local government area by population in Western Australia. History Stirling was established on 24 January 1871 as the Perth Road District under the ''District Roads Act 1871''. The district at that time included what are now the Cities of Wanneroo, Joondalup, Bayswater and Belmont. Swan Transit is an Australian bus company operating Transperth services under contract to the Public Transport Authority. It is a subsidiary of Transit Systems. Stirling railway station is a railway station on the Transperth network. It is located on the Joondalup line, nine kilometres from Perth station serving the suburb of Stirling. Transperth is the brand name of the public transport system serving the city and suburban areas of Perth, the state capital of Western Australia. Reid Highway
Reid Highway is a east-west highway and partial freeway in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, linking North Beach with Middle Swan. As part of State Route 3, it forms half of Perth's outer ring road along with Roe Highway, which it joins onto at its eastern terminus.
