Guy Jackson
Guy Rolf Jackson (23 June 1896 – 21 February 1966) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1919 and 1936, being captain for nine years. Jackson was born at Ankerbold, Tupton, Derbyshire, the son of Brigadier G M Jackson, chairman of the Clay Cross Co., an iron and steel business. He was educated at Harrow School and in 1914 scored 59 against Eton at Lord's. He was due to go to Oxford University, but shortly after the outbreak of World War I, he was commissioned into the Derbyshire Yeomanry in October 1914. He served as a captain at Salonica in January 1918, and was awarded the Military Cross. He was also mentioned in despatches twice and also won the French Legion d’Honneur and the War Cross (Greece). Tupton
Tupton is a village and civil parish in North East Derbyshire, Derbyshire, England, south of Chesterfield. The population of the civil parish including Egstow and Old Tupton was at the 2011 Census 3,428. It lies just north of Clay Cross on the A61 (Derby Road) which runs from Chesterfield to Alfreton. It comprises the areas of Old Tupton and New Tupton. However, it is generally referred to as Tupton. A similarly named area, Tapton, is a few miles away, being part of Chesterfield. The village has a primary school, and a secondary school with a sixth form. Military Cross
The Military Cross (MC) is the third-level (second-level pre-1993) military decoration awarded to officers and (since 1993) other ranks of the British Armed Forces, and formerly awarded to officers of other Commonwealth countries. English Cricket Team In South Africa In 1927–28
The England cricket team toured South Africa during the 1927–28 season, playing five Test matches against the South Africa national team and 13 tour matches under the banner of the Marylebone Cricket Club against local sides. The tour began on 12 November 1927 with a match against Western Province and ended on 21 February 1928 at the conclusion of another match against the same side. The five Tests were played between 24 December 1927 and 8 February 1928. The Test series was drawn 2–2, with England winning the first two and South Africa the last two, with a drawn Test in the middle. Plum Warner
Sir Pelham Francis Warner, (2 October 1873 – 30 January 1963), affectionately and better known as Plum Warner or "the Grand Old Man" of English cricket, was a Test cricketer and cricket administrator. He was knighted for services to sport in the 1937 Coronation Honours. Early life Warner was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the youngest of 21 children. His mother, Rosa Cadiz, was a Spanish woman, and his father Charles Warner, was from an English colonial family. He was educated in Barbados at Harrison College, and then sent to England to Rugby School and Oriel College, Oxford. Cricket career As a right-hand batsman, Warner played first-class cricket for Oxford University, Middlesex and England. Marylebone Cricket Club
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. Billy Bestwick
William Bestwick (24 February 1875 – 2 May 1938) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1898 and 1926. He was a medium-fast bowler who took over 1,400 wickets for the county, including 10 in one innings. From his wild temperament and reckless behaviour, he was known as a "bad boy" of cricket. Bestwick was born at Tag Hill, Heanor, Derbyshire. He was the son of a miner and started working at Coppice Pit at the age of 11. He debuted for the Derbyshire team in 1898, as a professional while still working in the mine in winter. He is one of the only two bowlers to have hit ten wickets in a single innings for Derbyshire, a feat he achieved in June 1921, the other being five-time Test cricketer Tommy Mitchell. George Buckston
George Moreton Buckston (12 March 1881 – 24 November 1942) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Cambridge University in 1903, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Derbyshire between 1905 and 1921. Buckston was born in Hope, Derbyshire and was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He scored 45 and 4 for Eton v Harrow at Lord's in 1900. He played for Cambridge University from the 1903 season during which he played five games. He played one first-class game for MCC in 1904 which was against Derbyshire and then joined Derbyshire in the 1905 season. Buckston made his County Championship debut for Derbyshire against Northamptonshire. Derbyshire won the match by an innings margin, Northamptonshire limited to just 52 runs in their first innings.
