Guy Barnea
Guy Marcos Barnea (; born 9 September 1987) is an Israeli swimmer who represented Israel at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has won three medals at the European Championships. As of March 2016, he held the Israeli records in the long course 50m backstroke (24.64), the short course 50m backstroke (23.27), and the long course 100m butterfly (51.36). Early life Barnea was born and raised in Omer in southern Israel, to Eitan and Rachel Barnea, the oldest of three sons, and his brothers Nir and Or are also swimmers. He began swimming at age six because his parents thought it would help his asthma. For high school he attended Hof Hasharon. He swam for club Hapoel Jerusalem, and was coached by Leonid Kauffman. College and swimming career Barnea attended UC Berkeley, where he studied Business Administration and was an All-American for the Golden Bears. Hapoel Jerusalem
Hapoel Jerusalem is a sport organization in Jerusalem as a local branch of the Hapoel movement. The branch was established in the 1920s and represents the city in more sports than any other sport organization in Jerusalem. Today, the club's leading sport clubs participate in basketball, association football, swimming, and futsal. Israel competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. This was Israel's fourteenth participation in the Summer Olympics. Israel sent 43 athletes to compete in Beijing, the largest Israeli delegation in Olympic history, with the previous record having been 40 in 2000, and was broken in 2016 with 47. The Olympic team was split 23 men and 20 women, which is the largest share of women in Israel's summer Olympic history. The International Olympic Committee and Israel Swim Association recognise the fastest performances in pool-based swimming events at the Maccabiah Games. Races are held in four swimming strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, over varying distances and in either individual or relay race events. In the 2009 Maccabiah Games, both men and women competed in sixteen events in the pool, each sex in the same events with the exceptions of the 800 m freestyle (women-only) and the 1500 m freestyle (men-only). Maccabiah records were broken on a total of 21 occasions, eventually leaving just eleven outstanding from earlier Games.
