Guv'ner
Guv'ner was an American alternative rock band from New York City, formed in 1993 following a relationship between members Charles Gansa and Pumpkin Wentzel. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth discovered the band when he was handed a demo of theirs by Julia Cafritz of Pussy Galore, who had known Wentzel since school. Moore put out Guv'ner's debut album '' Hard for Measy for You'' on his label, Ecstatic Peace. Further albums – '' The Hunt'' and '' Spectral Worship'' – were released on Merge Records Merge Records is an independent record label based in Durham, North Carolina. ''The Hunt'' is the second album by the American indie band Guv'ner. It was released in 1996 by Merge Records in the United States, and Wiiija Records in the UK. The album was produced by Don Fleming and Julie Cafritz. "She's Evil," "The Nazarene," and "Break a Promise" were released as singles. Guv'ner supported the album by touring with Cat Power. Critical reception ''The Washington Post'' wrote that "Guv'ner favors a ragged, grimy sound ... When bassist Pumpkin Wentzel ... adds her harmonies, Guv'ner goes pop despite its best attempts at edginess and minimalism." The ''Fort Worth Star-Telegram'' deemed the album "tuneful, heartfelt—sometimes humorous and goofy—rock." In The Fishtank
In the Fishtank was a series of EPs released by Konkurrent, an independent music distributor in the Netherlands. For the project, Konkurrent invited one or two bands to record and gave them two days studio time. The first four releases were recorded by individual bands, but eight of the last ten of them were the result of two bands (three in one case) teaming up to record. There were plans for more according to their website, but no new releases have come since ITF 15 in 2009. Julia Cafritz (born May 5, 1965) is an American musician and guitarist who was a member of Pussy Galore (band), Pussy Galore and Free Kitten. She is regarded as a cult figure from the New York City noise music scene of the 1990s. Early life Cafritz was born in Washington, DC, the daughter of Jennifer (née Stats) and Conrad Cafritz, a real estate developer with a personal fortune of over $100 million. She has a younger sister named Daisy von Furth, and two brothers, Eric and Matthew Cafritz. Her grandfather was the multimillionaire real estate developer and philanthropist Morris Cafritz. Zero Hour Records was an indie rock record label based in New York City. It was established in 1990 by Ray McKenzie, a former phone clerk for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. The label's first release was McKenzie's own 12" single "The Ozone Hole." In 1995, Rising Tide Entertainment, a joint venture between Doug Morris and MCA Music Entertainment, announced it would be distributing and marketing Zero Hour Records's albums. In 1997, the label opened the $300,000 mastering studio Ground Zero in SoHo, Manhattan. Matador Records is an independent record label, with a roster of mainly indie rock, but also punk rock, experimental rock, alternative rock, and electronic acts. History Matador was created in 1989 by Chris Lombardi in his New York City apartment. Lombardi had brought the Austrian duo H.P. Zinker into Wharton Tiers’ Fun City studio to record Matador's first release, "...and there was light". Amphetamine Reptile Records (or AmRep Industries) is a record label founded in 1986 by Tom Hazelmyer in Washington state. The label specializes in noise rock and also released '' Strap It On'', the debut album by alternative metal band Helmet which sold more than 40,000 records. According to Hazelmyer, the success of the album was vital to keeping AmRep going throughout the 1990s, as it "helped support the other things that sold less."
