Gustavus Hamilton, 1st Viscount Boyne PC (Ire) (1642–1723) was an Irish soldier and politician. In his youth, he fought in his cousin Sir George Hamilton's regiment for the French in the Franco-Dutch War. About 1678 he obtained a commission in the Irish Army. King James II appointed him to his Irish Privy Council in 1685. During the Williamite War Hamilton fought for the Prince of Orange defending Coleraine in 1689, fighting at the Boyne in 1690, fording the Shannon at the Siege of Athlone in June 1691, and fighting at Aughrim in July. King George I ennobled him in 1715. This Gustavus Hamilton, Viscount, must not be confused with Gustavus Hamilton, governor of Enniskillen. The Honourable Gustavus Hamilton (c. 1685 – 1735) was an Irish MP. Birth and origins Gustavus was born about 1685 in Ireland. He was the second son of Gustavus Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Brooke. His father would be ennobled in 1715 as Baron Hamilton of StackAllan and advanced to Viscount Boyne in 1717. Gustavus's mother was the eldest daughter of Sir Henry Brooke by his second wife, Anne St George. Brooke was knight of Brookeborough, County Fermanagh, and governor of Donegal Castle. Gustavus had two brothers and one sister, who are listed in his father's article. Honourable On 20 October 1715, his father was created Baron Hamilton of Stackallan. Gustavus Hamilton, 2nd Viscount Boyne Privy Council of Ireland, PC (Ire) (1710–1746) was an Irish people, Irish politician and an enthusiastic admirer of Italy and the Carnival of Venice. Birth and origins Gustavus was born in 1710, probably in Ireland. He was the eldest son of Frederick Hamilton (Donegal politician), Frederick Hamilton and his wife Sophia Hamilton. His grandfather was Major-General Gustavus Hamilton, 1st Viscount Boyne, Gustavus Hamilton who would soon become Viscount Boyne. His father was the eldest son and heir apparent but would predecease his grandfather. Gustavus Hamilton (painter)
Gustavus Hamilton (1739–16 December 1775) was an Irish miniature painter. Life and family Gustavus Hamilton was born circa 1739. He was the son of Rev. Gustavus Hamilton, vicar of Errigal and rector of Gallon, County Meath and his wife Jane (née Cathcart). Hamilton was one of the couple's younger children. The Hamiltons claimed descent from the Hamiltons of Priestfield, Midlothian, Scotland. Hamilton lived in Dublin at Parliament Street from 1765 to 1768, 1 Dame Street, College Green, and Cork Hill. He died at his home on Cork Hill on 16 December 1775 age 36, and is buried at St Werburgh's, Dublin on 18 December. A plaque was later erected in his memory there. Career One of Hamilton's teachers was Irish painter Robert West at his school on George's Lane, Dublin. Hamilton received awards for drawing in 1755 and 1756.
