Gustaf Sparre (speaker)
Count Nils Gustaf Alexander Sparre (31 May 1834 – 4 September 1914) was a Swedish politician and the fifth Speaker of Första kammaren of the Riksdag. He was married to Sophie Gustafva Sparre, daughter of Gustaf Adolf Vive Sparre and Sofia Bonde. Biography Sparre was born on 31 May 1834 in Norra Fågelås parish, Skaraborg County to Johan Alexander Artemis Sparre and Sofia Adelaide Rosalie Anker. The speaker of the Riksdag ( sv, Riksdagens talman) is the speaker (politics), presiding officer of the national unicameral legislature in Sweden. The Riksdag underwent profound changes in 1867, when the medieval Riksdag of the Estates was abolished. The new form of the Riksdag included bicameral system, two elected chambers, each with its own speaker. Since the ''de facto'' introduction of parliamentarism in 1917, the Riksdag has properly functioned as the institution to which the prime minister and the Government of Sweden, government are held accountable. In 1971 the institution was transformed into a unicameral legislature with 350 members, reduced to 349 in 1976 to avoid parliamentary deadlocks. Gustaf Adolf Vive Sparre
Gustaf Adolf Vive Sparre af Söfdeborg (4 September 1802 – 26 April 1886) was a Swedish nobleman, civil servant and politician. He was Sweden's Prime Minister for Justice, and later served as Chancellor of the Universities, and Marshal of the Realm, as well as several other offices. Biography Sparre was born in 1802 into the comital ''af Söfdeborg'' branch of the House of Sparre. He enrolled at Uppsala University in 1816 and graduated in 1823, after which he began his career as a jurist. In 1848 Sparre was chosen as Prime Minister for Justice, and had to deal with the Revolutions of 1848 as well as the reactionary response in the subsequent years. He resigned in 1856 and became President of the Svea Court of Appeals instead. Sparre also served as Chancellor of both Universities between 1856 and 1867, and was Marshal of the Realm from 1864 until his death. Skaraborg County
Skaraborg County ( sv, Skaraborgs län ) was a county of Sweden from 1634 until 1997. It was disestablished at the end of 1997 when it was merged with the counties of Gothenburg and Bohus and Älvsborg to form Västra Götaland County. The county was named after a fortress () outside the city of Skara. The seat of residence for the county governor was Mariestad from 1660 onwards and the largest city (during the 20th century) was first Lidköping and later Skövde. The county consisted of the northeastern part of the province of Västergötland. Even though Skaraborg County itself no longer exists, various organizations are still named after it, and cover that approximate area. These include several newspapers, one public radio channel and various non-profit organizations. Första Kammaren
The Första kammaren (literally "First Chamber", often abbreviated 'FK') was the upper house of the bicameral Riksdag of Sweden between 1866 and 1970 that replaced the Riksdag of the Estates. During the bicameral period, the lower house of the Riksdag was the Andra kammaren (literally "the Second Chamber"). Both chambers had generally similar and parallel powers. At the time of its abolition, the First Chamber had 151 members. These were indirectly elected for eight-year terms of office, from amongst the county councils (''landsting'') and city councils (''stadsfullmäktige''), which formed electoral colleges, some of which holding elections every year, with local elections being held every four years in even years when elections to the Second Chamber were not due to be held.
