Gus Statiras
Gus P. Statiras (July 6, 1922April 2, 2004) was a music dealer, record producer, and briefly a New York radio disc jockey under the moniker "Gus Grant." The founder of Progressive Records, Statiras produced and distributed jazz records in the 1950s. His label was bought and sold twice over twenty years, then re-emerged under Statiras in the 1970s and 1980s with Japanese backing for another run as an independent record label. Statiras sold it for a second time and then ran the label for Jazzology Records. Biography The son of Greek immigrants, Statiras was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. His father owned several lunch stands in New York City. Jazz guitarist Marty Grosz told Jazzhouse, "You couldn't help but like Gus because he was so enthusiastic and charming." Progressive Records
Progressive Records is an American jazz record company and label owned by the Jazzology group. It produces reissues and compilations of musicians such as Sonny Stitt, Eddie Barefield, George Masso, and Eddie Miller. History Progressive Records was founded by Gus Statiras in New York in 1950. When the business declined, Savoy bought and reissued much of the label's catalog, then sold it to Prestige with backing from Bainbridge, a Japanese record company. Progressive had a revival in the late 1970s when Statiras bought the label back from Fantasy, which by then had absorbed Prestige, which continued into the 1980s. Progressive's second era included recordings by Buddy DeFranco, Scott Hamilton, J. R. Monterose, and Al Haig. In the 1980s, Progressive was acquired by George Buck and his Jazzology group and is owned by the George H. Buck Jr. Jazz Foundation. Sonny Stitt
Edward Hammond Boatner Jr. (February 2, 1924 – July 22, 1982), known professionally as Sonny Stitt, was an American jazz saxophonist of the bebop/hard bop idiom. Known for his warm tone, he was one of the best-documented saxophonists of his generation, recording more than 100 albums. He was nicknamed the "Lone Wolf" by jazz critic Dan Morgenstern because of his relentless touring and devotion to jazz yet rarely worked with the same musicians for long. Stitt was sometimes viewed as a Charlie Parker mimic, especially earlier in his career, but gradually came to develop his own sound and style, particularly when performing on tenor saxophone and even occasionally baritone saxophone. Stride Piano
Stride jazz piano, often shortened to stride, is a jazz piano style that arose from ragtime players. Prominent stride pianists include James P. Johnson, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Willie "the Lion" Smith, Fats Waller, Luckey Roberts, Mrs Mills and Mary Lou Williams. Technique Stride employed left hand techniques from ragtime, wider use of the piano's range, and quick tempos. Compositions were written but were also intended to be improvised. The term "stride" comes from the idea of the pianist's left hand leaping, or "striding", across the piano. Al Haig
Alan Warren Haig (July 19, 1922 – November 16, 1982) was an American jazz pianist, best known as one of the pioneers of bebop. Biography Haig was born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in nearby Nutley. In 1940, he majored in piano at Oberlin College. He started performing with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker in 1945, and performed and recorded under Gillespie from 1945 to 1946, as a member of Eddie Davis and His Beboppers in 1946 (also featuring Fats Navarro), and the Eddie Davis Quintet in 1947, under Parker from 1948 to 1950, and under Stan Getz from 1949 to 1951. The Gillespie quintet, which included Haig, recorded four 78 r.p.m. sides for Guild Records in May 1945 which are regarded as the first recordings to demonstrate all elements of the mature bebop style. Fantasy Records is an American independent record label company founded by brothers Max and Sol Stanley Weiss in 1949.
