Gunning Campbell
Major-General Gunning Morehead Campbell, (6 January 1863 – 29 November 1920) was a Royal Marines officer who served as Adjutant-General Royal Marines. Military career Educated at Wellington College and the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, Campbell was commissioned into the Royal Marine Artillery on 1 September 1880. He took part in the Nile Expedition in 1884 and served as Inspector of Recruiting during the First World War World War I (28 July 1914 11 November 1918), often abbreviated as WWI, was one of the deadliest global conflicts in history. Belligerents included much of Europe, the Russian Empire, the United States, and the Ottoman Empire, with fightin .... The East Indies (or simply the Indies), is a term used in historical narratives of the Age of Discovery. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Major General Sir David Mercer, (1 July 1864 – 1 July 1920) was a Royal Marines officer who served as Adjutant-General Royal Marines. Military career Mercer was commissioned into the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1883.Obituary: Sir David Mercer, ''Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald'', 10 July 1920 He became commander of the 1st (Royal Naval) Brigade in 1914 and saw action during the Siege of Antwerp. Following the subsequent retreat, Mercer led the brigade into the Netherlands to avoid capture by the Germans. In 1915, still at the head of the brigade, he took part in the Gallipoli landings in June 1915. The plan had been for Mercer to become military governor of Imbros but, after fierce fighting, he was evacuated from Gallipoli in December 1915. The Corps of Royal Marines (RM), also known as the Royal Marines Commandos, are the UK's special operations capable commando force, amphibious light infantry and also one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy.
