Gunnar Pétursson
Gunnar Pétursson (31 March 1930 – 4 May 2022) was an Icelandic cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skier who competed in the 1950s. He finished 32nd in the 18 km event at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo where he was one of five skiers from Skutulsfjörður who competed at the games. He later competed several times in the Vasaloppet. Personal life and death Gunnar was born in Brautarholt, Skutulsfjörður in the Westfjords of Iceland. He was the brother of cross-country skier Oddur Pétursson who competed at the 1952 Winter Olympics, 1952 and 1956 Winter Olympics. Gunnar died in the nursing home ''Eyri'' in Ísafjörður, on 4 May 2022, at the age of 92. Westfjords
The Westfjords or West Fjords ( is, Vestfirðir , ISO 3166-2:IS: IS-4) is a large peninsula in northwestern Iceland and an administrative district, the least populous administrative district. It lies on the Denmark Strait, facing the east coast of Greenland. It is connected to the rest of Iceland by a seven-kilometre-wide isthmus between Gilsfjörður and Bitrufjörður . The Westfjords are very mountainous; the coastline is heavily indented by dozens of fjords surrounded by steep hills. These indentations make roads very circuitous and communications by land difficult. In addition many of the roads are closed by ice and snow for several months of the year. The 1956 Winter Olympics, officially known as the VII Olympic Winter Games ( it, VII Giochi Olimpici invernali) and commonly known as Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956 ( lld, Anpezo 1956 or ), was a multi-sport event held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, from 26 January to 5 February 1956. Vasaloppet
(Swedish for 'the Vasa-race') is an annual long distance cross-country ski race held on the first Sunday of March. The course starts in the village of Berga, just south of Sälen in western Dalarna, Sweden, and ends in the town of Mora in the central part of the province. It is the oldest cross-country ski race in the world, as well as the one with the highest number of participants. The race was inspired by a notable journey King Gustav Vasa made from Mora to Sälen when he was fleeing from Christian II's soldiers during the winter of 1520–1521 in the beginning of the Swedish War of Liberation.
