Gunder Olson
Gunder Olson (September 8, 1852 – December 11, 1948) was a North Dakota public servant and politician with the Republican Party. Biography Gunder Olson was born in the county of Telemark, Norway. He came to America with his parents when he was only one year old, and his family located in Winneshiek County, Iowa. He came to North Dakota in 1881 and worked as a merchant. He served as the sheriff of Walsh County, North Dakota from 1884 to 1888. He also served as the president of the North Dakota Board of the Blind Asylum in Bathgate, now thNorth Dakota School for the Blind in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Olson was elected as the North Dakota State Treasurer in 1910 and served until 1914. He did not seek re-election to another term since Treasurers were not permitted to serve more than two consecutive terms. Personal life Gunder Olson was married and had two daughters. Bathgate, North Dakota
Bathgate is a city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It sits on the banks of the Tongue River. The population was 47 at the 2020 census. Bathgate was founded in 1881. In 1908, the North Dakota School for the Blind was placed in Bathgate. The building still stands and is now occupied by a publishing company. Bathgate was the childhood home of former world-champion speed skater and figure skater Norval Baptie. History Bathgate was originally called Bayview, and was laid out under that name in 1879. The present name, after Bathgate, Scotland, was adopted in 1881. A post office called Bathgate has been in operation since that year. Grafton, North Dakota
Grafton is a city in the State of North Dakota and is the county seat of Walsh County. As of the 2020 Census, the city of Grafton had a population of 4,170, making it the fifteenth largest city in North Dakota. Grafton was founded in 1881. History The Grafton area was first settled by Thomas E Cooper in early 1879. He became postmaster later that year when a post office was constructed as part of expansions in service for the Northern Pacific Railway and the Great Northern Railway. It was incorporated as a village in 1881 and then became a city in 1903. In 1881, Walsh County was established and Grafton was subsequently designated the county seat. The city was named for Grafton County, New Hampshire, the native home of a large share of its early settlers. Walsh County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,563. Its county seat is Grafton. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on May 2, 1881, with areas partitioned from Grand and Pembina counties. It was organized on August 30 of that same year, with Grafton as county seat. It was named for George H. Walsh (1845–1913), a newspaperman and politician in Grand Forks. Geography Walsh County lies on the eastern side of North Dakota. Its east boundary line abuts the west boundary line of the state of Minnesota (across the Red River). The Red River flows north along the east side of the county on its way to Hudson Bay in Canada.
