Gummersbach
Gummersbach (; ksh, Jummersbach) is a town in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, being the district seat of the Oberbergischer Kreis. It is located east of Cologne. History In 1109 Gummersbach was mentioned in official documents for the first time. The document in question concerned the lowering of the episcopal tax for the church in Gummersbach by Archbishop Frederick I. At that time the name of the town was spelled as ''Gumeresbracht''. Gummersbach received town privileges in 1857. In 1855 Gummersbach's industrial history began with the foundation of the company Steinmüller. With the company's success the little village began to grow to a town. After the company was bought in 1998 the production in Gummersbach was closed and most of the company's area was unused. Due to the fact that by the time this area made up half of the downtown area the town of Gummersbach bought this area to develop it. Heiner Brand
Heiner Brand (born 26 July 1952 in Gummersbach) is a former West German handball player. He was the Germany men's national handball team coach from 1997 to 2011. He is the only person who has won the world handball championship both as a player (in 1978) and as a coach (in 2007). Career as player Heiner Brand joined at the age of seven the handball club VfL Gummersbach. He was with that club six times German champion (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1982 and 1983) and won four times the DHB-Pokal (1978, 1979, 1982 and 1983). He also became with that club internationally successful (European Cup winner in 1978 and 1979, European National Championship winner in 1974 in 1983, Super cup winner in 1979 and 1983, IHF cup winner in 1982). Oberbergischer Kreis
The Oberbergischer Kreis ( ksh, Boverbärjische Kreiß) is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Ennepe-Ruhr, Märkischer Kreis, Olpe, Altenkirchen, Rhein-Sieg, Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis, and the urban districts Remscheid and Wuppertal. Name The district was named after the region known as ''Bergisches Land'', which belonged to the County of Berg for most of the medieval era. What is called "Oberbergisch" ("upper Bergian") lies in the southeast of that earldom. By 1740, descriptions of the area distinguished between "Niederbergisch", which was north of the river Wupper, and "Oberbergisch" to its south. In 1816, after the entire Rhineland was annexed to Prussia, the districts of Waldbröl, Homburg, Gimborn, Wipperfürth, and Lennep were created within the area now covered by the district. Thomas Derksen (born 26 October 1988 German version/ref>), known as "Afu" Thomas (), is a German internet celebrity active in China. Biography Afu was born as Thomas Derksen, on 26 October 1988, into a Aussiedler family in Gummersbach, Germany, which later moved to Marienheide where Afu was raised. Harald Fischer
Harald Fischer (died November 15, 2000) was a German chiropractor residing in the West Bank since coming to Palestine in 1981 to work for a German charity. After retiring from professional life, Fischer continued to provide free medical care to local residents. He was residing with his Palestinian wife in Beit Jala near Bethlehem when his village was attacked by Israeli helicopter gunships. Fischer initially took cover under a stairwell with his wife, but later left his home to assist an injured neighbor whose house had been partially destroyed in the attack. As he entered the street Fischer was struck and instantly killed by an Israeli missile that left one of his legs severed and his body riddled with shrapnel. Hella Kemper (born 2 February 1959), known by her stage name Hella von Sinnen (lit. ''Hella out of her mind'', making pun of the aristocratic "von"), is a German entertainer and television presenter. Wolfgang Karius
Wolfgang Karius (born 4 June 1943) is a German conductor, organist and harpsichordist. Biography Karius was born at Gummersbach. He attended the Hochschule für Musik Köln where he studied organ under Wolfgang Stockmeier and Michael Schneider and the harpsichord under Hugo Ruf. After completing his studies in Cologne, he went to receive further education in Paris through a scholarship provided by the Government of France. Most of these studies were in the area of French organ music with Marie-Claire Alain and Jean Langlais. He pursued further master-classes in Baroque performance practice with Luigi Tagliavini, Anton Heiller and Kenneth Gilbert, and master-classes in conducting with Kurt Thomas and Sergiu Celibidache. He made further graduate studies in musicology and Romanistik studies at the University of Cologne. Burg Bei Magdeburg
Burg (also known as Burg bei Magdeburg to distinguish from other places with the same name) is a town of about 22,400 inhabitants on the Elbe–Havel Canal in northeastern Germany, northeast of Magdeburg. It is the capital of the Jerichower Land district in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The town is known for its mediaeval churches and towers. Adele Bloesch-Stöcker
Adele Bloesch-Stöcker (12 June 1875 – 10 September 1978) was a Swiss-German violinist and composer. She was born in Gummersbach, Germany, and was associated with Fritz Brun and Othmar Schoeck. She performed in Cologne, Berlin, Leipzig and Bern and was a founding member of the Bern Chamber Orchestra. In 1909 she married Swiss author Hans Bloesch (1878-1945). She was responsible for the musical aspects of the Schweizeische Ausstellung für Frauenarbeit (SAFFA) in 1928, for which she composed a SAFFA walz and directed the women orchestra. After giving up her performing career for health reasons, Bloesch-Stöcker turned to composition. She released her ''Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor'' in 1935, and conducted performances in 1935–36 in Bern and Burgdorf. An organist is a musician who plays any type of organ. An organist may play solo organ works, play with an ensemble or orchestra, or accompany one or more singers or instrumental soloists.
