Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap
The Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race, by invitation for four-year-olds and older over a distance of one and one-eighth miles on the turf track, held annually in late January or early February at Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach, Florida. The event currently carries a purse of $1,000,000. History The inaugural running of the event was on 2 March 1986, on the last day of a 71-day annual winter meeting as the Gulfstream Park Breeders Cup Handicap, the tenth race on the under-card of Florida Derby day. The event had additional sponsorship from the Breeders' Cup which gave the event immediate recognition and value. The event was won by Craig B. Singer's Irish-bred five-year-old Sondrio who started at odds of 7/1 and ran the miles distance in 1:40.60 winning by lengths. Kip Deville
Kip Deville (May 3, 2003 – June 11, 2010) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse whose most important win came at age four in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Mile. He was an Eclipse Award finalist for American Champion Male Turf Horse in 2007. Background Kip Deville was Bred in Oklahoma by Dr. Warren Center. He is the most notable horse sired by Kipling, a son of Gulch. His dam Klondike Kaytie (1988–2005), from whom he inherited his gray coat, produced at least four other winners. Racing career In 2008, Kip Deville won his second straight edition of the Maker's Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland Race Course. Though he was not scheduled to race again until early September, when he was sent to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to compete in the Woodbine Mile, a race in which he ran second in 2007. Buck's Boy (1993 – January 27, 2022) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Background He was bred by horseman Noel Hickey's Irish Acres Farm of Ocala, Florida who sold him to George Bunn of Quarter B Farm in Pleasant Plains, Illinois. Out of Noel Hickey's mare Molly's Colleen, by multiple stakes winner, Verbatim, his grandsire was U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee and U.S. Horse of the Year, Buckpasser. Racing career Conditioned by Noel Hickey, Buck's Boy was sent to the track at age three, making six starts of which he won three. Yagli (horse)
Yagli (foaled in 1993 in Kentucky) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse. He was bred and raced by prominent horseman and CEO of Gulfstream Aerospace Allen Paulson, who also owned U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Cigar, European Horse of the Year and winner of the 1991 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Arazi, as well as 2002 American Horse of the Year Azeri, among others. A colt who developed late, Yagli began racing at age three but did not meet with much success until age five in 1998 when he won three Graded stakes races including the Hialeah Turf Cup Handicap and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Turf. The following year, he won three Grade I races at age six in 1999. Royal Anthem (April 2, 1995 – 2018) was an American-bred and primarily British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won top-class races on both sides of the Atlantic. Cetewayo (horse)
King Cetshwayo kaMpande (; ; 1826 – 8 February 1884) was the king of the Zulu Kingdom from 1873 to 1879 and its Commander in Chief during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. His name has been transliterated as Cetawayo, Cetewayo, Cetywajo and Ketchwayo. Cetshwayo consistently opposed the war and sought fruitlessly to make peace with the British, and was defeated and exiled following the Zulu defeat in the war. He was later allowed to return to Zululand, where he died in 1884. Early life Cetshwayo was a son of Zulu king Mpande and Queen Ngqumbazi, half-nephew of Zulu king Shaka and grandson of Senzangakhona. In 1856 he defeated and killed in battle his younger brother Mbuyazi, Mpande's favourite, at the Battle of Ndondakusuka.
