Gulf Yachting Association
The Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) formed in 1901, is a non-profit organization consisting of 39 member and affiliate yacht club's from Houston, TX to Sarasota, FL along the Gulf of Mexico in the United States. Organized specifically to further the sport of yacht racing, marine safety and seamanship, the GYA is the oldest organization of yacht clubs in the United States. Fish-class Sloop
The Fish class sloop, also known informally as the Fish Boat, is a one-design sailboat designed in 1919 by New Orleans resident Rathbone DeBuys, member of the Southern Yacht Club. It is reputed to have been the most popular sailboat racing class on the US Gulf Coast in the early 20th century and was the Gulf Yachting Association one-design racer until it was replaced by the Flying Scot in 1969. It should not be confused with Nat Herreshoff's larger sloops, the Annisquam Fish Class Marconi rigged catboats, nor various motor yachts and surfboards of similar names. Flying Scot (dinghy)
The Flying Scot is an American sailing dinghy that was designed by Sandy Douglass as a one-design racer and first built in 1958.Sherwood, Richard M.: ''A Field Guide to Sailboats of North America, Second Edition'', pages 100-101. Houghton Mifflin Company, 1994. Production The design has been previously built by Tanzer Industries, Douglass & McLeod, Customflex and Lofland Sail-craft. Today it is built by Flying Scot, Inc. in Deer Park, Maryland, United States. A total of 5,300 boats have been completed. Design The Flying Scot is a recreational sailboat, built predominantly of fiberglass with a balsa core. It has a fractional sloop rig with aluminum spars. Viper 640
The Viper 640 is an American trailerable sailboat, that was designed by Brian Bennett for racing and first built in 1996. The Viper 640 is an accepted World Sailing class boat and the official one-design boat of the Gulf Yachting Association for its Capdevielle Series. Production The boat was originally built by Viper Boats in the United States and then in 2005 Rondar Raceboats of the United Kingdom was named the official class manufacturer. 400 examples had been completed by 2018. Design The Viper 640 was designed to combine the planing performance of a dinghy with the stability of a keelboat. The result is a small recreational planing keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with carbon fiber spars. The Biloxi Yacht Club (BYC) is located in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA, on the shores of the Mississippi Sound. Buccaneer Yacht Club (Alabama)
Buccaneer Yacht Club (abbreviated formally as BucYC or in local tradition as BYC) is a member-run sailing club which has operated out of Mobile Bay, Alabama since 1928. It is a member club of the Gulf Yachting Association and the United States Sailing Association. Its members are active competitors in Finn, Viper 640, 420, Fish class sloop, Flying Scot, Laser, Optimist, Sunfish, PHRF and Portsmouth class events. While the Mobile Yacht Club predates it, BucYC remains arguably the oldest ''continuously operating'' sailing club in Alabama. The Mobile Yacht Club is a private boat club and harbor which first met as a group in 1847 before establishing a physical clubhouse in the 1850s. It is located in Mobile, Alabama.
