Gujarati (magazine)
''Gujarati'' was a Gujarati language weekly published from 1880 to 1929 by Ichcharam Desai and his sons. History In late nineteenth century, the majority of Gujarati magazines in Bombay (now Mumbai) were published by Parsi people. With focus of catering Hindu people, the ''Gujarati'' weekly was launched. It was the first Gujarati magazine for Hindus. The first issue with eight pages was printed at Kaisar-i-Hind Press and published on 6 June 1880. The name ''Gujarati'' was suggested by poet Narmad to its editor Ichchharam Desai. The weekly published articles on political, social and literary subjects. It was also instrumental in spreading the views of the Indian National Congress. It published articles in simple, non-Sanskritized Gujarati language focusing on common people. It became very popular all over Gujarat and Kathiawad. Ichchharam Desai
Ichharam Suryaram Desai (10 August 1853 – 5 December 1912), also known by his pen name, Shankar, was a Gujarati author, anthologist and journalist. Though he did not complete his primary education, he worked with several newspapers and magazines and also wrote several novels, edited anthologies and translated classics. Life Ichharam was born on 10 August 1853 in Surat. He studied through sixth grade in English and during his youth developed an interest for manuscripts. He briefly worked for ''Deshimitra'' press as a typesetter. He moved to Bombay in 1876. He published ''Aryamitra'' weekly for four months before joining '' Bombay Samachar'' as a proofreader. In 1878, he moved back to Surat and started a monthly publication, ''Swatantrata'', named by poet Narmad. He was arrested for treason by British for his political writing but was freed later with the help of Pherozeshah Mehta. Nari Pratishtha
''Nari Pratishtha'' (; gu, નારીપ્રતિષ્ઠા) ( Dignity of Woman) is an 1882 essay, published in 1884, by Manilal Dwivedi written in Gujarati which discusses the status of women in Hindu tradition. This essay is considered to be Manilal's most important work. With its publication, Manilal became one of the major Indian social thinkers of his time. It remains central to Manilal's ideas on social reform. All his other writings on the women's questions and the social reform movement use this text as a referent Manilal, in his discussion of the place of women in Hindu tradition, adhered to the traditional view in some regards, and opposed widow marriages. Gujarati Sahitya Parishad
Gujarati Sahitya Parishad () is a literary organisation for the promotion of Gujarati literature located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It was founded by Ranjitram Mehta with the aim of creating literature appealing to all classes of society and cultivating a literary sense among the people. Many prominent people including Mahatma Gandhi and Kanaiyalal Munshi have presided over the organisation. Its headquarters, located on Ashram Road, is known as Govardhan Bhavan. It has a conference hall and library. ''Parab'' is the monthly magazine of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad and is published on the 10th of every month. Kanaiyalal Munshi
Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi (; 30 December 1887 – 8 February 1971), popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, was an Indian independence movement activist, politician, writer and educationist from Gujarat state. A lawyer by profession, he later turned to author and politician. He is a well-known name in Gujarati literature. He founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an educational trust, in 1938. Munshi wrote his works in three languages namely Gujarati, English and Hindi. Before independence of India, Munshi was part of Indian National Congress and after independence, he joined Swatantra Party. Munshi held several important posts like member of Constituent Assembly of India, minister of agriculture and food of India, and governor of Uttar Pradesh.
