Guinea-Bissau At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Guinea-Bissau competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, from August 5 to 21, 2016. It was the nation's sixth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics. Five Bissauan athletes, three men and two women, were selected to the team, competing only in athletics, judo, and freestyle wrestling. Half of Guinea-Bissau's roster made their Olympic debut, with track sprinter Holder da Silva and freestyle wrestler Augusto Midana returning for their third consecutive appearance in Rio de Janeiro. Midana also reprised his role of leading the Guinea-Bissau team for the third straight time as the nation's flag bearer in the opening ceremony. Guinea-Bissau, however, has yet to win its first Olympic medal. Magomed Idrisovich Ibragimov (russian: Магомед Идрисович Ибрагимов; born 2 June 1985) is a Russian-born naturalized Uzbekistani wrestler of Avar descent, who competes in the heavyweight freestyle division. He won bronze medals at the 2016 Olympics and 2018 Asian Games. Ibragimov took up wrestling at age 12 in Makhachkala, Russia, and studied at the Dagestan State Pedagogical University there. In 2005, he defeated Khabib Nurmagomedov by judge's decision at the Russian Combat Sambo Championship, competing in the under- category. A pin, or fall, is a victory condition in various forms of wrestling that is met by holding an opponent's shoulders or scapulae (shoulder blades) on the wrestling mat for a prescribed period of time. The women's 48 kg competition in judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held on 6 August at the Carioca Arena 2. The gold and silver medals were determined by a single-elimination tournament, with the winner of the final taking gold and the loser receiving silver. Judo events awarded two bronze medals.
