Guillaume de Montfort, also known as Guillaume of Hainaut, was a French nobleman of the end of the 10th century, the first Lord of Montfort-l'Amaury. He was succeeded as Lord of Montfort-l'Amaury by his son Amaury I de Montfort. Guillaume is possibly the son of Amaury, Count of Valenciennes. Guillaume de Montfort ( en, William of Montfort) (died 27 August 1101) was a French bishop, most notably the Bishop of Paris from 1095 to 1101. Early life Montfort was the son of Simon I de Montfort. His date of birth is not known. He became a clerk to Saint Ivo of Chartres, the Bishop of Chartres. Election In 1095, Pope Urban II held the Council of Clermont at Clermont-Ferrand, France. It excommunicated Philip I of France and Bertrade de Montfort, William's sister, for adultery. William had been noted as a great supporter of Urban II, and after the death of Geoffrey of Boulogne on 1 May 1095 he was in the running to become Bishop of Paris. As the queen's brother, he held considerable power and sway over the council that elected him - he was also known for his religious devotion. However, he was young and a fairly minor member of the French church. Guillaume de Montfort, (died 27 September 1432, Siena, Italy) was a 15th-century French cleric, Bishop of Saint-Malo and cardinal. Biography Montfort was born in Dinan, Brittany, the son of , lord of Montfort and Gaël, and Isabeau de la Roche-Bernard, lady of Loudéac (died 1400). Entering the church at a young age, Montfort was appointed protonotary apostolic and Archdeacon of Dinan.Moréri, p. 375 Named Bishop of Saint-Malo on 13 October 1423, the following year he took command of the military forces of Brittany, and advanced on the English besieging Mont Saint-Michel, forcing them to withdraw. Pope Martin V offered Montfort the bishoprics of Saint-Brieuc in 1424, and of Dol in 1430, but he refused both. On 29 May 1424, he demonstrated his opposition to John V, Duke of Brittany, who was constructing a dungeon at the château of Saint-Malo, by throwing a stone.
